KidsNet Says There's a Big Need to Foster Little Ones

DUBUQUE, Iowa - New numbers show a real gap when it comes to foster children. There are roughly 6,100 Iowa children in foster care, but only about 2,300 foster families. 765 Iowa children are ready for forever homes. Those children are legally eligible for adoption.

Mike and Molly Schumacher have 3 children. They were foster parents for the youngest two, until they made them a permanent part of their family.

"We're licensed for two kiddos in our house so with the two we've adopted, technically we're full until we can add more space," Molly said.

It appears the Schumachers are part of a trend.

"We've lost foster parents to adoption which is a happy wonderful thing, but it's bittersweet for us needing foster parents," said Alice Tirrell of KidsNet.

According to KidsNet, there are dozens of children in Dubuque who need a foster family. Five of those children need an immediate placement.

"Its the consistency. It's the every night there is a meal on the table. There is somebody to help you with homework," Tirrell said.

At the Schumacher's crowded house, the family is thinking about building a new house, in order to make room for more foster kids.

"It's also a way to help other people that you'd want your family to be helped if you were in a similar situation," Mike said.
