90% Lore

All Critics (61) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (55) | Rotten (6)

We know where this is going pretty early on, but that doesn't prevent "Lore" from being riveting stuff, start to finish.

This striking, slow-building drama ... uses fractured, impressionistic imagery as a mirror of moral dislocation as the children make their way through an unfamiliar landscape.

It's a remarkable accomplishment.

Saskia Rosendahl is a highly expressive actress within the limited confines of her character, and the film is studded with memorable scenes.

"Lore" is the sort of movie you'd already expect to rip your heart out, but that doesn't diminish the tragedy when it does arrive.

If "Lore" is an upsetting and uncomfortable film set in a morally bleak landscape, it also offers a guardedly optimistic vision of the possibility of human change.

It isn't exactly a profound film, but Saskia Rosendahl's performance has considerable depth, and she interacts admirably with her siblings.

An unusual, constantly surprising post-WWII odyssey, this film may feel a bit thin and episodic, but it tells an evocative story with darkly moving emotion.

Shortland does an impressive job of evoking the rotten heart of a country turning in on itself.

The film is ultimately about a spectacular fall from innocence that feels both highly personal and universal.

As with all the best fairytales, there is a blackness and brutality at its centre.

Not even safety and sanctuary quite wipe clean the trauma slate. New autocracies lie in wait, ready to replace the old.

Shortland and her ferocious lead actress, Saskia Rosendahl, burrow so deeply into the thoughts of the stubborn, infuriating protagonist that you leave the movie unable to stop wondering what the rest of her life will be like.

A tough yet rewarding viewing experience!

Certainly sounds good on paper, but a little shallow and overstated in reality.

While prone to arty lingering, thus wasting time that would have been more wisely spent plugging gaps in the narrative, Shortland slathers the story in enough mud and horror to make it a compellingly visceral experience.

A provocative and emotionally complex drama with a terrific central performance from newcomer Saskia Rosendahl.

It's a close, intimate film - sometimes so close you can feel the breath of its characters in your face.

Shortland creates a palpable sense of atmosphere, and coupled with fluid camerawork and a verdant forest backdrop, Lore looks and feels a world apart from other World War II-set dramas.

This oblique and understated tale of lost innocence conveys both an individual's experiences and a powerful sense of a ruined nation.

Shortland's measured pacing and hypnotic visuals make this a mesmerising journey through a defeated landscape.

The result is a stimulating portrayal of an under-examined aspect of Nazism's terrible legacy.

Enough cannot be said about its leading lady, a truly captivating actress at a very young age who should be an international star.

New Vinson App Offers A Vision of Mobile TV If It Was Crammed Into An iPad

Screen Shot 2013-02-25 at 09.08.58Remember "mobile TV", whatever that was? No we don't either, but that's not about to deter new startup Vinson which is launching their their new mobile OTT (Over The Top) TV app on iOS for broadcasters, content aggregators and content distributors at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Essentially this is watching live TV on a tablet, with the full TV guide, plus PVR/time-shifting, plus "social" features for shared watching experiences. They've basically crammed a vision of the future TV into an app, and it looks pretty good.

The Saga of Tomsan

A page from a 1999 KoroKoro comic. A page from a 1999 KoroKoro comic.

Courtesy of Tom Byer

In 2009, Zinedine Zidane, the legendary soccer player, participated in a coaching clinic in Ajinomoto Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. Children and parents filled the stands. The mood was jovial. Zidane was a once-in-a-generation sort of player, a kind of mad genius remembered today as much for his ball skills as for the infamous 2006 World Cup headbutt. The parents in attendance hoped some of those skills, like his signature pirouette (not the headbutt), would rub off on their children. But as Zidane and the gathered coaches began their lessons, something strange happened. The children in the audience began to chant. They weren?t chanting ?Zidane,? although people occasionally shouted for his autograph. The children chanted ?Tomsan,? the nickname of a 52-year-old retired player from upstate New York who never won a Champions League title, a World Cup Golden Ball, or a FIFA World Player of the Year award: Tom Byer.

Byer played briefly in Japan in the late 1980s, before retiring to work as a youth coach. Today, many in Japan see him as a major catalyst behind the country?s rising status as a global soccer power, responsible for increasing soccer?s popularity and teaching fundamental skills to hundreds of thousands of children, including many of the nation?s most celebrated players. In 1988, the year Byer hung up his cleats, the Japanese men?s and women?s national teams weren?t even successful regionally. In 2011, the Japanese men took home the Asian Cup for a record fourth time, and the Japanese women?s national team won its first World Cup title.

Although what Byer achieved is notable, how he did it is the fascinating part. He started off running a no-name, grass-roots soccer clinic and within a decade, he?d become a fixture in Japan?s most popular children?s comic book and a character in the country?s leading morning kids? show. Tom Byer is the Mr. Rogers of Japanese soccer. There?s nothing in America like him, and as both the Japanese and American men?s squads prepare for World Cup qualifying matches tomorrow, it?s worth thinking about what the U.S. program could learn from Byer?s Japanese success.

Byer?s playing career started in 1983, the worst possible time for an aspiring American pro. The North American Soccer League was on the verge of collapse and MLS was more than a decade away.? Things weren?t much better in Europe, where the sport, scandalized by hooligans, had begun a kind of low ebb, punctuated by a series of stadium disasters. But Byer?s short, nomadic career brought him to Japan, a country he fell in love with.

?Back in those days, if you were a good juggler of the soccer ball, you could entertain,? he said. So after retiring, he started a traveling youth soccer clinic based as much around his ability to ?catch people?s eyes? with juggling tricks as his coaching chops. He didn?t speak much Japanese, and in order to set up gigs, he cold-called English-speaking institutions around Tokyo, like U.S. military bases and international schools.

In 1989, during a clinic at a Canadian school, Byer learned that one of his students, a young boy, was the son of a Nestl? employee. Byer needed outside funding to expand his business, and about a week after the clinic, out of ideas, he decided to take a chance and call the boy?s father. He scoured the phone book, and dialed what he guessed was the right number. To his relief, the boy answered. Byer asked to speak to the boy?s father but first asked what his dad did at Nestl?. The boy said, ?He?s the president.? A week later, Byer signed an agreement with Nestl? to sponsor 50 clinics in a yearlong, nationwide tour. During each clinic, Byer had to give out samples of Milo, an Ovaltine-like chocolate drink, but it was a small price to pay for his first big break.?

Although he now had financial backers (Nestl? sponsored him for the next 11 years), Byer did not consolidate his coaching philosophy until 1993, when he opened his first soccer school, which has since expanded to 100 campuses with roughly 20,000 pupils nationwide.? That year, Paul Mariner, the former head coach of Toronto FC, introduced Byer to a technique-based approach to youth development called the ?Coerver Method.? It changed the way Byer viewed coaching.

Created by Wiel Coerver, a Dutch coach, the method is a quasi-academic system based on specific skill acquisition. Rather than putting kids on a field and having them chase the ball around?which is how most young kids practice across the United States?it teaches close ball control and situational, one-on-one moves: stopovers, feints, various ways to manipulate the ball with the sole of the foot. Tactics and passing come later, once the kids master ball control.

In 1998, Japanese broadcasters seized upon the upcoming World Cup as the perfect moment to begin promoting the 2002 tournament, which would be held in Japan for the first time ever. Executives at Tokyo TV and ShoPro, a production company, added a two-minute soccer spot to Oha Suta, the top-rated children?s morning show, and they asked Byer to host. Suddenly, instead of standing in front of a few hundred young soccer players a couple times a week, Byer was teaching his skills in a green screen studio, backed by animated stadiums and fans. From 3 ?million to 5 million children saw him every single day.

At the same time, executives from the affiliated Shogakukan publishing company offered him a two-page panel in KoroKoro Komikku, Japan?s biggest children?s comic book. The United States has no equal to the cultural giant that is KoroKoro. The monthly comic book has an enormous circulation?Byer puts it at about 1.2 million (for comparison, in 1977, during its heyday, Mad magazine circulated 2,132,655 copies in the entire year, in a country that?s more than double the population of Japan) and a readership in the neighborhood of 3 million Japanese preteens. The magazine is hundreds of pages long and shares storylines with Japanese video games. It played a big role in transforming Kirby and Pok?mon in to global media juggernauts.

?The comic book was to promote soccer, to inform people about the technical side, it was to highlight the stars and try to inspire and motivate kids,? Byer said.

The print and TV programs were a kind of tag team that helped ignite excitement for soccer in Japanese culture. (According to a recent survey by NHK, a Japanese toymaker, soccer is now more popular among Japanese boys than baseball). Oha Suta aired every day, right before school, perfect for motivating playground training sessions. KoroKoro, meanwhile, put soccer practice on the same level as the country?s most esteemed cartoons and superheroes.

Facebook's plan for West Campus to be reviewed Monday by Menlo Park planners

Facebook's plan to build a second campus on the west side of Bayfront Expressway moves to the Menlo Park Planning Commission on Monday.

The social network company has asked the city to rezone its 22-acre West Campus site because the building height there is now limited to 35 feet.

The 43,555-square-foot office and rooftop park that Facebook wants to build above a surface-level parking lot would reach a height of 73 feet, according to city documents. The building has been designed by celebrated architect Frank Gehry.

The commission also will consider approving an official statement that the development's benefits would outweigh its negative environmental impacts. According to a city memo, one significant and unavoidable impact could be additional traffic at the intersections of Marsh and Middlefield roads and University Avenue and Donohoe Street. Construction noise is another potential impact.

In addition, the commission is to consider allowing removal of 175 heritage trees and approving Facebook's agreement to provide either $4.5 million in fees to the city for affordable housing or put up 15 affordable housing units elsewhere, or a combination of both.

In January, the city council approved a development agreement for the West Campus project that calls for Facebook to pay Menlo Park $1.5 million over 10 years and $100,000 for local improvements, and to restrict the number of vehicles entering and leaving the new campus. Facebook

also has committed to pay the city at least $194,000 a year in property taxes.

The West Campus, previously occupied by Tyco Electronics at 312 and 313 Constitution Drive, would be given the new address of 1 Facebook Way. About 2,900 employees will work there, according to project documents.

The new building will be linked to the main campus -- the former headquarters of Sun Microsystems -- via a tunnel underneath Bayfront Expressway. The main campus has been permitted to accommodate as many as 6,600 employees.

The planning commission will meet in the council chambers, 701 Laurel St., at 7 p.m.

Slain model's father: Pistorius to suffer if he's lying

Accused Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius will "suffer" alone if he is lying, the father of his slain girlfriend said in an interview with a South African newspaper. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

By Berenice Garcia, Writer, NBC News

Accused Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius will ?suffer? alone if he is lying, the father of his slain girlfriend said in an interview with a South African newspaper.

Barry and June Steenkamp, mother and father of deceased 29-year-old model and law school graduate Reeva Steenkamp, told the Afrikaans-language paper Beeld that they were grief-stricken by the loss of their daughter.

?It doesn?t matter how much money he has and how good his legal team is, he will have to live with his conscience if he allows his legal team to lie for him,? Barry Steenkamp told Beeld.

?But if he is telling the truth, then perhaps I can forgive him one day,? he told the paper. ?If it didn?t happen the way he said it did, he must suffer, and he will suffer ? only he knows.?

June Steenkamp said she was sent a flower bouquet and card by Pistorius? relatives.

?Yes, but what does it mean? Nothing,? she told Beeld. She said the Pistorius family was ?not to blame? for her daughter?s death.

Pistorius? family said that they felt ?relief? to have the accused athlete home in a statement on Saturday.

?This constitutes a moment of relief under these otherwise very grave circumstances,? Arnold Pistorius, Oscar?s uncle, said in a statement. ?We are extremely thankful that Oscar is now home.?

?We are acutely aware of the fact that this is only the beginning of a long road to prove that, as we know, Oscar never intended to harm Reeva, let alone cause her death,? the uncle said. ?We realize that the law must run its course, and would not have it any other way.?

The family announced on Saturday that it was canceling all social media sites for Carl and Aimee Pistorius, Oscar?s brother and sister. Janine Hills, a spokesperson for the family, said that Carl Pistorius? Twitter account had been hacked.

?It is most unfortunate that during this sensitive time, someone would choose to hack into Oscar Pistorius older brother, Carl Pistorius? Twitter handle,? Hill said in a statement. ?Carl did not tweet this afternoon, out of respect to Oscar and Reeva.?

There was no hint that the romance between Steenkamp and Pistorius would come to such a tragic end, the model?s uncle told Rock Center with Brian Williams.

?Nobody ever saw it coming,? Mike Steenkamp said. ?Never forewarned.?

Pistorius, 26, is charged with premeditated murder in the Valentine?s Day shooting death of Steenkamp. Pistorius has said that the shooting was an accident, and that he thought he was shooting at an intruder in his Pretoria home. He was freed on bail Friday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Could an Avocado a Day Keep the Doctor Away?

Eating avocados regularly may improve the quality of your diet and some key heath markers, according to a new analysis.

After crunching the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001 to 2008, researchers found that eating avocados was associated with an overall better-quality diet; higher levels of HDL (the "good" cholesterol); a lower risk of metabolic syndrome; and a lower body weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference.

Metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of symptoms, raises a person's risk for heart disease. The symptoms include blood pressure higher than 130/85 mmHg; a fasting blood glucose level of 100 mg/dL or higher; a waist circumference of 40 inches or more in men and 35 inches or more in women; HDL ("good") cholesterol levels of less than 40 mg/dL in men and less than 50 mg/dL in women; and triglyceride levels of 150 mg/dL or higher. A person with three or more of these symptoms is diagnosed with metabolic syndrome.

The Hass Avocado Board supported the study. Findings were published in the recent issue of Nutrition Journal.

For the current analysis, researchers examined the diet quality of 17,567 adults ages 19 and older who participated in the NHANES survey. Of these, 347 (2 percent) ate avocados. Their mean daily avocado intake was about half of a medium avocado, containing about 114 calories, half of which come from fat.

NHANES interviewers gathered nutrition information based on 24-hour dietary recalls. The NHANES program of studies regularly assesses the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. Researchers calculated diet quality using the USDA's Healthy Eating Index, which indicates how closely diets follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The study reported that people who ate avocados had significantly higher intakes of fruits and vegetables in general, and lower intakes of added sugars. The avocado eaters also had higher intakes of total fat, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, dietary fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium and vitamin K, along with a lower intake of carbohydrates.

Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, which has been associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Previous research elsewhere has found an estimated 19 percent reduction in the risk of coronary disease when the intake of monounsaturated fat is increased by 5 percent, the current researchers wrote.?

Avocado eaters also fared well in the weight department. People who ate avocados weighed on average about 8 pounds less than non-avocado eaters. The avocado group also had a lower BMI, 26.7 versus 28.4, and their waists were about 2 inches narrower. Finally, these respondents had higher HDL levels: an average of 55 mg/dL compared to 52.6 mg/dL for people who didn?t eat avocados.

The study does not prove a cause and effect relationship, only an association. The researchers acknowledge that the people in the study may not have accurately recalled what they ate; what's more, the pool of avocado eaters was small.

Still, the results are intriguing. "These findings suggest a role for avocados in improving dietary quality and possibly reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome in the United States," the researchers wrote. "Further research is needed to verify this epidemiological data and study the potential association between increased intake of avocados and other dietary components."

Pass it on: Eating avocados may raise "good cholesterol" levels, lower BMI and reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Surprise: Cockroaches are Fastidious Groomers!

Despite inhabiting sewers and cesspools, cockroaches are quite clean ? or at least their exteriors are, according to entomologist Coby Schal of North Carolina State University. That's because cockroaches are constantly grooming themselves, particularly their antennae. Publishing in PNAS, Schal and colleagues investigate why they groom.

In Insider Trading, Bain Capital And KKR Millennium Fund Sells ...

In a victory for common sense, the trading behavior of company executives, directors, and large shareholders in the stocks of firms they're registered "insiders" at have been proven profitable to monitor by both academic studies and (more importantly) the experience of your fellow professional investors.

Below are lists of the top 10 mainly open-market insider purchases and sales filed at the Securities and Exchange Commission Wednesday, February 20, 2013 as ranked by dollar value.

Please note, however, that these are factual lists, not buy and sell recommendations. Dollar value is only one metric to assess the importance of an insider transaction, and, frankly, often not even the most important metric that determines if an insider transaction is significant.

In insider purchases, multi-national pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE:GSK) bought $2,567,090 worth of Theravance (NASDAQ:THRX), of which it is a beneficiary owner. ?Theravance specializes in?small molecule medicines intended for the therapy of respiratory diseases, bacterial infections, and central nervous system pain. Thomas Siering, President and CEO of real estate investment trust Two Harbors (NYSE:TWO), bought $211,680 worth of company stock.

In insider sales, Apollo Management Holdings GP, a beneficiary owner of LyondellBasell (NYSE:LYB), sold $1,532,000,000 worth of company stock. LyondellBasell manufacturers chemicals and polymers, refines crude oil, produces gasoline blending components, and develops technologies for the production of polymers. At Sensata Technologies (NYSE:ST), which manufactures and sells sensors and controls, beneficiary owner Bain Capital sold $953,033,984 worth of company stock. At health care services company HCA (NYSE:HCA), there were two big sales, with KKR Millennium Fund selling $856,746,048 worth of company stock and Bain Capital selling $845,746,048 worth of company stock. There were also two sales at LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD), with Co-Founder and Director Reid Hoffman selling $13,276,458 worth of company stock and CEO Jeff Weiner selling $6,424,900 worth of company stock.

At InsiderInsights.com, we find new investment ideas just about every day using these and more intricate insider screens to determine where we should focus our subsequent fundamental and technical analysis. And while stocks don't (or shouldn't) move up or down based on insider activity alone, insiders tend to be good indicators of when real stock-moving events like earnings surprises, corporate actions, and new products may be in the offing.

Prosecutor questions woman in Arizona murder case

PHOENIX (AP) ? A woman charged in the stabbing and shooting death of her Arizona lover traded barbs with a prosecutor Thursday under a withering cross-examination as she struggled to explain why she can recall precise details of her life from years earlier, yet can't remember crucial aspects of the murder case against her.

Jodi Arias, 32, faces a potential death sentence if convicted of first-degree murder in the June 2008 killing of Travis Alexander in his suburban Phoenix home. She was testifying for a ninth day Thursday as the prosecution began its cross-examination, hammering her with questions about her apparent selective memory.

Questioning grew so heated that the judge admonished Arias and prosecutor Juan Martinez to stop talking over each other. Arias smirked at times while Martinez stammered in frustration.

Trial is set to resume Monday.

Alternating between tears and poise, Arias has testified in painstaking detail about the events that led her to kill Alexander, she says in self-defense.

Yet when asked for details from the day of the killing, she didn't recall much.

"Do you have memory problems, ma'am?" Martinez asked.

"Sometimes," Arias replied.

Martinez hammered back, noting it's puzzling that she can't remember such crucial details to the case, yet "can tell us what kind of coffee you bought at Starbucks sometime back in 2008."

"When do you have memory problems? Martinez asked, raising his voice.

"Usually when men like you are grilling me and screaming at me or men like Travis," Arias replied calmly.

Martinez also questioned her contention that she was monogamous throughout her relationship with the victim while referring to Arias' previous testimony that the day she killed him, she went to visit a man in Utah and slept in his bed, kissing and cuddling.

She said she didn't know Alexander was dead when she left his home, noting her memory from that day has "huge gaps."

"At that point you didn't know, according to your own story, that Mr. Alexander was dead, right?" Martinez snapped.

"I guess I knew. I just wasn't expecting it," Arias said softly. "I wasn't really in my own mind."

"Make up your mind, please," Martinez responded sharply.

Arias testified on Wednesday she recalled little about the day of the killing. She remembers Alexander in a rage, body slamming her and chasing her around his home.

She said she grabbed a gun from his closet, and it went off, but she wasn't sure if she shot him. She had no explanation for his 27 stab wounds and slit throat. He had been shot in the forehead.

Arias also attempted to explain away her repeated lies. She first told authorities she knew nothing about Alexander's death, then later blamed it on masked intruders before eventually settling on self-defense.

She said she was scared of being arrested, had been contemplating suicide and didn't want to sully Alexander's name with accounts of his violent behavior and lurid details of their sexual relationship, given his public persona as a devout Mormon who was saving himself for marriage.

Martinez also hammered her Thursday on other changing stories. Arias claims she injured her right finger when Alexander beat her months before the killing, even once holding up her crooked digit in a dramatic display for jurors in previous testimony.

However, Martinez noted Arias told a detective after her arrest that she injured her finger on the day of Alexander's death when one of the intruders attacked her.

"You gave him a different story," Martinez said pointedly.

"Yes," Arias replied.

"Then you testified about it in this court and you gave us another story of how this happened, right?" Martinez asked.

"No," Arias said defiantly.

Martinez noted that Arias made no mention of injuring her finger in a fight with Alexander in her journal where she kept pages of intimate details from her life.

"And no one knew about this supposed or claimed injury to your finger until after you killed Alexander, right?" he said.

"That's right," Arias replied.

Prosecutors say Arias planned the killing in a jealous rage, savagely attacking Alexander in his home.

Alexander's friends say Arias is lying about her contention that he had sexual desires for young boys, and that he was physically abusive, and no witnesses have testified of any previous violent behavior or his interest in children. Authorities also have said they did not believe Alexander owned a gun, and there has been no testimony to back up Arias' story that he kept one in his closet.

Arias' grandparents reported a .25 caliber handgun stolen from their Northern California house about a week before the killing ? the same caliber used to shoot Alexander ? but Arias claims to know nothing about the robbery. She says she brought no weapons to Alexander's home on the day she killed him.

Prosecutors must prove she planned the attack in advance to secure a first-degree murder conviction and a chance for a death sentence.

Of the day she killed Alexander, Arias says she only remembers shooting at him, putting a knife in the dishwasher and disposing of the gun in the desert as she drove from Arizona on her way to Utah. And she immediately began planning an alibi "to "throw the scent off for a little while."

Warmer Waters Make Weaker Mussels

60-Second Science

Mussels, ocean temperatures, climate change

More 60-Second Science

When it comes to mussels, bigger isn?t necessarily better. Tiny fibers called byssals enable mussels?the shellfish kind?to anchor themselves to coastlines despite crashing ocean waves.

But new research shows that the attachment fibers weaken in warm water. A temperature rise of 15 degrees Fahrenheit lessens fiber strength by 60 percent, possibly causing them to fail completely. As climate change raises ocean temperatures, mussels may be forced to cooler waters.

Emily Carrington of the University of Washington presented the research at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston:

"Researchers have dissected mussel beds and found, I think, upwards of 100 different species. So if the mussels go it really changes that community.

"We also eat mussels and so there?s applications in aquaculture. The way they grow mussels, is the mussels have to remain attached to the ropes on their long lines. So if the mussels fall off before the farmers return to reap their harvest, then they?ve lost a lot of money."

Apple iPhone 5, 4S Beat Samsung Galaxy S3, Become World?s Best-Selling Smartphones In Q4 2012 [Report]

Research firm Strategy Analytics came up with a new survey report of the global smartphone market, in which it said that Apple iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S each outsold the Samsung Galaxy S3 during the fourth quarter of 2012, the lucrative holiday season. While iPhone 5 taking the top spot may not come as surprise, the 16-month old iPhone 4S outperforming one of the popular Android handsets -- Galaxy S3 -- is indeed unexpected.

As per the?data revealed?by Strategy Analytics, Apple shipped an estimated 27.4 million units of iPhone 5 during the fourth quarter of 2012 that helped the flagship device capture an impressive 13 percent share of the global smartphone market and thereby, become the world?s best-selling smartphone.

Even in the second spot, it was Apple again with an estimated 17.4 million units of the iPhone 4S shipped worldwide, accounting for 8 percent of the smartphone share globally in Q4 2012. That said, Apple?s iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S currently appear to be the world?s two most popular smartphone models. Both the smartphones together accounted for one in five of all smartphones shipped worldwide during the period.

According to the survey report, it was the ?rich touchscreen design,? coupled with ?extensive distribution across dozens of countries and generous operator subsidies,? that helped iPhone 5 to outshine other products.

Surprisingly, the popular Samsung Galaxy S3 could manage to be only the third best-selling smartphone model in the world. During the period, Samsung shipped 15.4 million units of the Galaxy S3 globally, capturing 7 percent share of the worldwide smartphone market.

Despite being popular among consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia, Samsung Galaxy S3?s market share dropped by over 3 percent from previous quarter.

Strategy-Analytics-smartphones-Q42012 (Photo: Strategy Analytics Handset Country Share Tracker) Global smartphone shipments and market share by model in Q4 2012.

However, the research firm seemed optimistic about the future of Samsung Galaxy S devices, saying the ?global demand for the Galaxy S3 appears to have peaked and Samsung will surely be keen to introduce its rumored Galaxy S4 upgrade in the coming weeks to fight back against Apple?s popular iPhone range.?

As AppleInsider?noted, the launch of the Apple iPhone 5 months after the May release of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and subsequent price cut of the iPhone 4S to $99 on contract contributed to the remarkable boost in Apple?s sales.

Video: Can Democrats hold onto the Senate?

>>> obama's second term is under way, of course, and that means one thing, it's legacy building time, but pushing through a democratic agenda becomes much easier when the party controls both the house and the senate , of course. it's a tough challenge for 2014 when you look at the map. mark begich in alaska, mark pryer in ashe, mary landrieu , mack baucus, kay haguen and tim johnson are all looking at potentially tough races in states mitt romney won as will the democrat who runs for jay rockefeller 's seat in wsk. nor is it a cake walk in the few blue states either. for example in iowa, minnesota where you have democrats running for the senate . conservatives see a big opportunity. they took a look at this front page story as we did in the washington times today. quote, obama agenda is risky for red state democrats . guy cecil has good news for democrats . he pulled a rabbit, rather a donkey, out of his hat last year when the democrats gained seats. actually gained seats in a year that looked like a sure loser for democrats . that's his job to pull off another miracle and hang onto the senate . maggie has beenerman is at politi politico, a senior politico reporter. this is important although it's a year and a half off, people want to know how obama is going to make it. is he going to put points on the board, immigration reform , something on gun safety . he be likes to talk about himself being a center left version i think of a ronald reagan meaning he wants to get into the history books. the question is can he do it with a republican house? probably not. he's hoping to switch it. let's talk about the senate , however. a lot of people in the democratic party are lucky to be in the senate because they don't match up with the way those states vote in presidential elections. is this a danger?

>> well, it's always a danger. the question is how do you deal with it?

>> how do you beat the spread?

>> we have a road map from what happened in 2012 . we don't have to guess about what was going to happen. there was no one daying we passed the affordable care act , that's an easy vote so we can move on to something else. our incumbents last cycle voted for tough things time after time and they won. we had five senators win in states the president lost. heidi heitkamp upon in north dakota . the president lost by 21 points. the way do you it is you represent the people of your state. people in north dakota are the same as anywhere else. they don't want a xerox machine as their senator that looks at where the president votes and does the same thing. they want something that represents their state and the thing we have to learn is the lesson the republicans are trying to teach us. the fastest way to be a minority party is to have a long list of things that everyone has to check off in order to be a member of the party. if we're going to win in manhattan and in minot, we have to be able to actually talk to both sets of people at the same time and we got to have people that represent their states and we have to be a party that's willing to allow people to vote their conscience.

>> i'm looking at a couple of the senators who are women, kay haguen in north carolina , mag zbi, and, of course, mary landrieu , she escapes the vengeance of the right every six years. she manages to get re-elected down there by being careful and by being very respectful of the local attitudes about politics, especially like guns in louisiana and immigration, of course, down there. if you're the democratic leader, do you want to advise people to vote with the majority and help them pass bills or save themselves?

>> i think you're going to see a little bit of both not to step on guy's territory here. but i think that you will see some public boosterism and you will see people privately getting a pass. i think you have seen it in response to immigration in the last couple days with some of the senators you have discussed a minute ago who are not offering up huge stands in support of getting something done immediately. they're taking more of a wait and see attitude. i think you're going to see a lot of that. where i think you will see it more, however, is on guns. i think that's going to be much tougher sell.

>> well, we were talking about it before we went on and my concern watching politics, not being in it, is the gun people, the second amendment people who are really ferocious on that issue and fairly so. that's their position. it's democracy. they don't forget. so michael bloomberg can go into a state and he could potentially, he's not going to do it, drop $5 million or $10 million. he's doing in the south side in chicago but he's going to leave. he's going to go into other issues. wind energy or something he's interested in and that person is still there trying to get re-elected.

>> the fact of the matter is we're not going to get 100% of all democratic votes for every piece of gun control legislation that goes through the senate . we are going --

>> if you were harry reid and you work with him and the democrats , would you encourage him to expose people like mark pryor down in arkansas and max baucus out in montana? would you ask them to vote on an assault weapons ban ?

>> i think harry reid will give them the same advice i give them in private which is when you agree with the president, you should say so. and when you disagree with the president --

>> don't buckle from pressure from the white house .

>> we have seen mark pryor has come out in opposition. i suspect you will see a couple others, but i would just juxtapose that against what's happening on the other side. the reason we're starting in the senate first is because john boehner and the leaders on the house side can't get anything done. they can't get a majority of their own party to support the speaker's own --

>> do you realize how their strategy could work. you and the senate will be the first cut. you are the first guys going over the top in world war 1 blowing the whistles, cutting through the con ser tina wire. you guys could get mowed down. i'm thinking about pryor, begich, landrieu, haguen, tim johnson . they all have to vote up or down. what happens is the house which is run by republicans, they don't have to take on issues like that because they've already been beaten.

>> here is the difference. the republican party is running people like myrrh you can do and todd akin and christine o'donnell --

>> if you're lucky again.

>> er eschewing everybody he else. when lugar and cassell aren't conservative enough, what does the republican party do? they throw them out. we embrace folks from louisiana and arkansas and they're not going to vote with us all the time and we have to accept that fact. but the fact --

>> maggie , let me ask you this. what happens when they don't have these lucky jokers in the deck like akin and mourdock. they were really gifts to these people.

>> they were.

>> what happens if they don't show up in 2014 because people like rove and others have culled the herd?

>> i think there's no question that democrats got lucky last year. republicans had a pretty poor crop of candidates. you had some candidates, senate candidates, republicans, who lost in states mitt romney won. so you can't only blame mitt romney . however, i also think you have to give guy and his team credit in terms of recruitment. it's not just the other side. but i think that there's no question 2014 is probably going to be a much tougher year for democrats than last one was. i think a lot of things came, you know, were aligned well. some were proactive by the democrats , some were not. but i think that it's going to be different and it's playing out on a different legislative climate.

>> total congressional question, maggie , you start. does the president need to win the house next time and hold the senate to be a president of history? to get the kinds of bills passed that puts you up there at the top presidents ?

>> no. but it would help, and i don't think it's going to happen. i don't think they're going to win the house.

>> i certainly think it's going to be difficult for both those things to happen but i would agree with maggie . juke hold the senate though, can't you?

>> we intend to hold the senate . no one thought we could hold it last cycle. not only did we hold it, we picked up seats. nobody was saying tommy thompson was extreme. we won because we recruited candidates that best fit their state.

>> you know what i have to say, what i care about, you know what i respect in politics? people like the people on this list.

>> me, too.

>> anybody can come from a big city and vote 100% ada and be guaranteed a seat for life. when you're out there on the frontier as a moderate democrat and trying to get elected among moderate democrats in your state, maybe you have 50% of the states moderate democrats , you have to prove yourself every six years, prove yourself to the people out there. and that's really gutsy. great stuff. good luck. you got great ink today. don't think it's going to stay that way. it never stays that way. guy cecil. it's like baseball managers, they have one good world series season.

>> i'll take it. i'll take one.

>> thank you very much, guy cecil. good to have you back, maggie .

>>> up next, things you done want to hear from a guy dressed up like abraham lincoln . this is the best david letterman top ten i have heard in so long and it's coming up.

>> damn girl , you make mary todd look like ulysses s.

Sony PS4 controller leaks again with touchpad and PlayStation Move panel

Another picture of the prototype PS4 controller has been leaked online, revealing the upcoming PS4 device will feature touchpad and PlayStation Move capabilities.

As revealed in two separate leaked pictures last week, the next-gen Playstation controller may integrate PlayStation Move motion control, and sport a touchpad interface akin to that of the PlayStation Vita.

The latest prototype PlayStation 4 controller picture mirrors that offered by the previous leaks, but this time from another angle. This leak seems to concrete the ideas we have about what the PS4 controller will look like, ahead of the rumoured PS4 release date announcement at a PlayStation event in New York on 20 February.

Like the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 controllers, the device for the upcoming PS4 or the codenamed PlayStation Orbis will retain the traditional D-Pad and four button layout. The analogue sticks feature a new concave style similar to that of the Xbox 360 controller and the start, select and PlayStation buttons have been moved to incorporate the touchpad. In fact, the start and select buttons aren?t barely visible, apart from two button-like shapes either side of the touchpad.

This touchpad could operate in a similar fashion to the rear-touchpad of the PlayStation Vita, but other rumours suggest it could even be a touchscreen LCD screen to display additional buttons, media controls or in-game information.

The most recent picture shows the PS4 controller with elongated handles in comparison to the previous leaks, retaining the LED strip at the top for reported PlayStation Move integration. However, the new angle reveals what appears to be a 3.5mm headphone jack between the handles on the bottom of the PS4 controller, presumably for a voice chat accessory.

An original source for the picture has yet to be traced, but with the controller looking very similar to that pictured in last week's leaks, we could be looking at the official prototypes for the next PS4 controller. If not, we?re sure to find out during the PlayStation event on February 20.

What do you think of the design for the PS4 controller? Do you think Sony needs to integrate a touchpad and PlayStation Move motion controls into the PS4 controller? Give us your thoughts via the Trusted Reviews Facebook and Twitter pages or the comments section below.
