Not Bad!: LEGO Super Mario Level Aquarium Decorations

From geekology, This is a couple pictures and a video of the 55-gallon aquarium Redditor jennyleighb's roommate decorated with a custom LEGO Super Mario Bros. scene he built. Pet fish never had it so good! Still, you know what it needs? "A skeleton pirate drinking out of a jug of rum?" Exactamundo. I'd suggest hitting up the Wal-Mart pet department, but all the dead fish in their tanks will end up depressing you. I don't know who's supposed to take care of those things, but they should NOT be allowed to own pets (I suspect it's the greeter).

Go here for more pictures and a video tour.

Scientist at Work Blog: The Extinction of Hawaiian Birds

David J. Flaspohler, an avian ecologist and conservation biologist at Michigan Technological University, writes from Hawaii, where he is studying the influence of human activities on birds and the natural ecosystems that support them.

Monday, May 21

This morning, we have driven the four-wheel-drive truck up the 35 miles and 5,000 feet of elevation from Hilo to the turn onto a gravel road that will take us back to the study area. We pass through the gate, enter the Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, and begin to pick our way across a road bulldozed across the lava. Sitting in the truck as it rumbles and creaks over this road, you are in a constant state of motion, jostling against the person sitting next to you, the truck door and, if you are not wearing your seat belt, the roof. To the farthest kipuka, it is about 30 minutes on this lava road. From there, it is a 45-minute hike across boot-shredding lava to the most distant kipuka.

In bird research, you don?t lift anything heavier than a pair of binoculars. Here, the hardest days are when we move the mist-net poles, nets, sledgehammer, and the bird banding kit to the most distant kipuka. Mist nets are fine nets that were invented in Japan in the 1600s and made of silk to catch small birds for food; they?re now made of nylon, adapted by 20th-century researchers as a way to humanely capture birds for measurement and marking. After banding for two days in one of the 34 kipuka involved in our studies, the poles, nets, sledgehammer and banding equipment are hiked across the lava to set up in another kipuka.

Our poles are made of galvanized electrical conduit pipe, and because most Hawaiian forest birds spend their time in the tall forest canopy, we use double- or even triple-high mist nets to reach 25 feet up. Once in the kipuka, we search for a natural net lane in the forest. Two people work to thread the net over the poles, and raise and steady the poles with guy ropes. A rope and pulley system is used to raise the net, and to lower it when a bird is caught.

To date, we have banded about 1,500 birds over two breeding seasons, each released with a unique combination of colored bands so it can be identified when it is sighted again. From this information, we can estimate annual survival and adult and juvenile dispersal.

We are also monitoring nests to estimate success and to see if the presence of nonnative rats influences nest success; rats will eat eggs, nestlings and even adults if they can catch them, as rats can climb trees. Half of the kipuka we?re studying have rats, and half had rats removed. The long-term viability of these bird populations will be determined by whether survival and reproduction are sufficient to compensate for mortality and nest failure. Just 20 miles away, the i?iwi, a common bird in these kipuka, has all but disappeared from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, evidence that survival and reproduction were insufficient to sustain that population.

As I cross the lava, balancing 30 pounds of poles on my shoulder, I glance up at the broad shield volcano Mauna Loa and consider an amazing bit of irony. Visible on the volcano is the oldest atmospheric carbon dioxide monitoring station in the world. Data from this station provided one of the first pieces of evidence that the carbon dioxide was increasing in concentration. It might seem that a bit of warming would pose little threat to tropical birds, if not for Captain Cook and British imperial ambitions.

Cook was the first European to stumble across the Hawaiian Islands in 1778, and his arrival brought a new era of exotic species introductions, malaria-carrying mosquitoes among them. Mainland birds have their own variety of malaria, but after long exposure it is rarely fatal. In contrast, native Hawaiian birds have almost no resistance. Since the early 1800s, the exotic Plasmodium and its tropical mosquito vector (Culex quinquefasciatus) have contributed to the extinction of at least a dozen endemic Hawaiian birds and have all but eliminated the remaining species from the warm lowlands.

For now, tropical Culex cannot survive the cooler temperatures at our field sites above 5,000 feet. Above 9,800 feet, trees and the birds that depend on them disappear. So today, native birds with no resistance to malaria are confined to a narrow elevational band. Under many warming scenarios, this refugia promises to narrow or even disappear as Culex is able to move upslope, leaving the ultimate fate of these remarkable birds to an human-mediated endgame between the parasite and the na?ve immune systems of Hawaii?s surviving birds.

Considering the carbon dioxide station some miles away, I wonder at the cruel calculus of all of these forces, set in motion by the ambitions of men centuries ago and poised to erase a wonder of evolution that will never come again. Yet seeds of hope have been found within the genetic blueprint of some Hawaiian birds. The apapane and Hawaii amakihi have shown some genetic resistance to malaria. If hope is indeed the thing with feathers that perches in the soul, as Emily Dickinson wrote, then these birds may be its perfect embodiment.

UMD's Williams Qualifies for NCAA Finals

May 25, 2012 Updated May 25, 2012 at 9:43 PM CDT

Pueblo, CO (Northland's NewsCenter) --- UMD senior runner Lexi Williams qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run on Friday night, finishing eighth in her heat at the Division II NCAA outdoor track and field championships.

Williams ran the race in 2 minutes, 10.72 seconds to put her through to Saturday's championship race, with that scheduled to be run at 5:55 p.m. CST.

The Rice Lake native is making her first-ever appearance the NCAA championships, and she is one of only two UMD runners to qualify this year for the national meet.

Introduction

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.3 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2009 some 2.6 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 1.8 million people died from AIDS. By mid 2011, 23125 people were infected with HIV, from which, 4311 people died in Iran. The vast majority of people with HIV and AIDS live in lower- and middle-income countries. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world. Since there is no vaccine for AIDS and there is no certain cure for AIDS, curing, prevention and secondary infection is essential. This study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge on AIDS and the way of preventing it among faculty members of Zanjan branch, Islamic Azad University.

Materials and methods

This descriptive study involves 90 people. Data was collected by a questionnaire in five parts (Demographic questions, factors related to transmission, pathology, complications, and finally prevention of AIDS). Analysing of data was conducted by SPSS software.

Results

Findings revealed that awareness of faculty members of Islamic Azad University of Zanjan about transmission of disease was 72.2, regarding pathology of disease was 67.7, related to complication of disease was 73.3, and about prevention of disease was 74.4.Finally, the level of knowledge of faculty members of Islamic Azad University of Zanjan was higher than moderate (average %70).

Conclusion

It can be concluded that the rate of awareness is almost satisfactory but it is not enough and it is necessary to perform educational programs. Key Words: AIDS, Faculty member, Knowledge, Prevention.

Zen Bound 2 [Android Game Review]

Zen Bound 2

We could probably all use a little more Zen in our lives. With the stress of work, bills, family, etc., it can be hard to take a moment, relax, and just be calm. Like Osmos HD and Gravilux before it, Zen Bound 2 looks to continue the proud tradition of Android games that both bake your noodle and calm your nerves.

The premise of Zen Bound 2 is simple: wrap a rope around a wooden figurine. Everywhere the rope touches, the wood is painted. Your goal is to paint as much of the wood as you can while using the least amount of string. When you're all done painting, you then? have to maneuver the rope around a nail sticking out of the figurine and tie a knot. Once the knot is tied, the level is over.

For each level you play, there's minimum conditions for winning, based on what percent of the figurine you paint. Paint more of the figurine, you get more flowers. Paint less, receive less. (Flowers are the reward/currency for unlocking more levels.)

This mechanic forces you to go a replay levels you tried to burn through, as you'll soon realize that the levels you want to be at are more expensive than the flowers you've got. It's actually pretty brilliant in that regard, because playing levels over again is great practice and keeps you coming back.

Zen Bound 2 also lives right up to its name. The background music is soft and ambient, with the occasional tinkle of wind chimes and other wooden instruments. It's all very subdued and under the surface, contributing to the calming vibe. Make sure you dim the lights and put your feet up before loading this game up.

Zen Bound 2 is $2.99 in the Google Play Store. We've got video and download links after the break.

Turning the 'fiscal cliff' into a gentle slope

Economists and policymakers worry that the recovering US economy won't be able to handle the amount of deficit reduction headed its way in the coming months. It can;t be avoided, but it can be made easier to overcome.

By Diane Lim Rogers,?Guest blogger / May 24, 2012

This November 2011 file photo shows the U.S. Capitol building in Washington. Rogers argues that steep budget cuts to reduce the deficit are unavoidable, but steps can be taken to make the cuts gentler on a recovering economy.

The Congressional Budget Office has just released an excellent analysis prepared by CBO economist Ben Page on the ?Economic Effects of Reducing the Fiscal Restraint That Is Scheduled to Occur in 2013? (in typically dry CBO-speak).? I prefer to think of it as an economics version of the story ?The Little Engine That Could.?? You see, the ?engine? is the U.S. economy, and this so-called ?fiscal cliff? is, rather than something we are in danger of falling off of, something we are about to ram straight into?like a huge wall just ahead on the tracks, at January 2013.? When economists and policymakers fret about this fiscal cliff, it?s not the usual worrying about the unsustainable deficits we are projected to run over the next several decades; it?s concern that our economy, still in ?recovery,? can?t handle the amount of deficit reduction that is scheduled to be forced upon us in just a matter of months.

Skip to next paragraph Diane Lim Rogers

The CBO analysis validates this worry, first defining the scale of the cliff as $607 billion worth of deficit reduction in one year (or $560 billion net of economic feedback, cutting the deficit nearly in half between fiscal years 2012 and 2013), then explaining that letting our economy run head onto this cliff will in fact, slow it down and perhaps even cause the ?double-dip recession? economists have been fearing.? From the summary (emphasis added):

Under those fiscal conditions, which will occur under current law, growth in real (inflation-adjusted) GDP in calendar year 2013 will be just 0.5 percent, CBO expects?with the economy projected to contract at an annual rate of 1.3 percent in the first half of the year and expand at an annual rate of 2.3 percent in the second half. Given the pattern of past recessions as identified by the National Bureau of Economic Research, such a contraction in output in the first half of 2013 would probably be judged to be a recession.

So CBO then looks at the question: what if we could avoid the cliff entirely?by sort of going around it?? Well, going around it would indeed keep us going in 2013:

CBO analyzed what would happen if lawmakers changed fiscal policy in late 2012 to remove or offset all of the policies that are scheduled to reduce the federal budget deficit by 5.1 percent of GDP between calendar years 2012 and 2013. In that case, CBO estimates, the growth of real GDP in calendar year 2013 would lie in a broad range around 4.4 percent, well above the 0.5 percent projected for 2013 under current law.

So that sounds, good: if we can?t go through the fiscal cliff, just go around it (or just say ?poof? and imagine it away).? OK, I?ll take that ticket? Except, as CBO next explains, then the inevitable (real) ?cliffs? ahead just get taller and steeper:

However, eliminating or reducing the fiscal restraint scheduled to occur next year without imposing comparable restraint in future years would reduce output and income in the longer run relative to what would occur if the scheduled fiscal restraint remained in place. If all current policies were extended for a prolonged period, federal debt held by the public?currently about 70 percent of GDP, its highest mark since 1950?would continue to rise much faster than GDP.

Such a path for federal debt could not be sustained indefinitely, and policy changes would be required at some point. The more that debt increased before policies were changed, the greater would be the negative consequences?for the nation?s future output and income, for the burden imposed by interest payments on the federal debt, for policymakers? ability to use tax and spending policies to respond to unexpected challenges, and for the likelihood of a sudden fiscal crisis. And?the longer the necessary adjustments in policies were delayed, the more uncertain individuals and businesses would be about future government policies, and the more drastic the ultimate changes in policy would need to be.

You see, even over the longer term, the ?fiscal cliff? is more like one we will have to climb rather than one we?re in danger of falling off of.? And the higher the cliff gets, the harder it will be in the future to ignore it or continue to go around it, or actually get up it.? So going around and avoiding the cliff entirely isn?t a long-term option, nor necessarily the best option even now.? CBO explains the policy options, which I?m labeling as different strategies for driving the train called the U.S. economy toward the 2013 fiscal train stop.? The CBO concludes that there are three basic options (my labels and emphasis added):

What Might Policymakers Do Under These Circumstances?

[1: "Going Around the Cliff, For Now"]? They could address the short-term economic challenge by eliminating or reducing the fiscal restraint scheduled to occur next year without imposing comparable restraint in future years?but that would have substantial economic costs over the longer run.

[2: "Running Head-On Into the Cliff"]? Alternatively, they could move rapidly to address the longer-run budgetary problem by allowing the full measure of fiscal restraint now embodied in current law to take effect next year?but that would have substantial economic costs in the short run. Or,

[3: "Grading the Cliff Into a Climbable Hill"]? if policymakers wanted to minimize the short-run costs of narrowing the deficit very quickly while also minimizing the longer-run costs of allowing large deficits to persist, they could enact a combination of policies: changes in taxes and spending that would widen the deficit in 2013 relative to what would occur under current law but that would reduce deficits later in the decade relative to what would occur if current policies were extended for a prolonged period.

In other words, the U.S. economy does face an ?uphill battle? in terms of the fiscal outlook; heading to higher ground (meaning lower deficits), eventually, is unavoidable.? But to quote from a particularly wise engine, ?I think [we] can? do it.? The 2013 fiscal cliff is at least an opportunity to take a constructive attitude toward climbing that hill, and hopefully our policymakers, after the election, might have the wisdom and courage and work ethic needed to start turning that fiscal cliff into something our economy can more easily and successfully climb.

ASP Web Hosting: One Stop Solution For Firms | Online Business ...

?

ASP web hosting has been a major help for all those businesses that went online in the recent years. We all know well the importance of being a part of the virtual world these days because of which every day hundreds and thousands of entities are making their way to World Wide Web. Talking about ASPs, it makes sure that the web sites are secured in the best possible way so that the information lying on the portal is completely protected. But this is only possible with this type of hosting service provider as the ordinary ones are not as efficient or effective.

Businesses, as we know, have a lot of sensitive data being uploaded and downloaded every single day, making security a major concern whenever any entity decides to go online. Hosting companies using ASPs provide an added benefit by providing tight security on a twenty four seven basis. In recent years, many companies switched from ordinary web hosts to ASP hosts only because of the extra edge that this new type of hosting offers.

One of the major benefits being offered by ASP web hosting is that by using fiber optic connections, data gets processed one a much faster speed, making visitors? experience smooth. Most of us know the main reason for companies making web sites and getting them registered is to get an access to the world?s biggest market. And as millions and billions of customers are visiting web sites round the clock from every nook and corner of the world, it is very important that no trafficking issues arise otherwise they would stop visiting that particular web page.

To make their visit worthwhile, it is very important that uploading and downloading of data is done in split seconds. Moreover, optic fiber system allows clients to use as many graphics and animation as they want as the data processing is being done very quickly. Since 2002, ASP hosting has been the most popular and switched upon hosting framework mainly because of its syntax compatibility. Its attuned nature allows it to be used with HTML and XML both, something offered by hardly any other host framework.

Bomb kills 5 in Syrian capital

(AP) ? A bomb that apparently struck a restaurant in the Syrian capital killed at least five people, the state-run news agency said Tuesday, as activists reported intense clashes between army defectors and soldiers in the restive north.

It was not clear what the exact target of the blast was, although authorities in Damascus said it appeared to be a police station. But photos of the scene released by the state news agency, SANA, showed what looked like a restaurant. The area was considered too dangerous for journalists to access.

SANA said the bomb went off late Monday in the Damascus neighborhood of Qaboun, which has seen frequent anti-government protests.

The revolt in Syria began 15 months ago, and there are fears that extremist groups could be trying to enter the fray and exploit the chaos. The U.N. estimates the conflict has killed more than 9,000 people since March last year.

The conflict already has spilled across the border into neighboring Lebanon. The countries share a complex web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, which can turn violent.

Lebanese Sunni groups supporting and opposing the Damascus regime fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns early Monday in the Lebanese capital, killing at least two people in the most serious outbreak of violence in Beirut since the uprising began next door.

The spark for the violence was the killing of Sheik Ahmed Abdul-Wahid, an anti-Syrian Sunni cleric, and his bodyguard Sunday in northern Lebanon. A Lebanese soldier shot the men, apparently after they failed to stop at an army checkpoint. The killing fueled deep anger over the perceived support of some of Lebanon's security forces for the Syrian regime.

Earlier this month, the arrest of Shadi Mawlawi, an outspoken Lebanese critic of Syrian President Bashar Assad, set of several days of clashes in northern Lebanon that killed eight people. Mawlawi was accused of belonging to a terrorist group.

On Tuesday, he was released from jail ? a move that could help defuse tensions.

Judicial officials said Mawlawi was released on about $330 bail and will not be allowed to leave the country.

During a news conference in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, Mawlawi said he was "subjected to psychological pressure and torture" following his May 12 arrest and was forced to give false confessions that he was connected to terror groups.

Mawlawi said he denies any link to such groups.

As he spoke, supporters at the news conference lashed out at the Syrian regime, saying "Assad is the enemy of God."

Meanwhile, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human rights reported intense clashes Tuesday in Syria between troops and defectors in the towns of Atareb in Aleppo province and Kfar Rouma in Idlib.

There was no immediate word on casualties.

The U.N. has an observer mission in the country with about 270 unarmed monitors. Their presence has not stopped the violence although the level of bloodshed has dropped compared to previous months.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous toured the central city of Homs, the flashpoint of the uprising, on Monday and met U.N. observers in the city as well as the governor.

"The first goal is to obtain a reduction in the level of violence and this you have clearly done here in Homs," Ladsous said in a statement released Tuesday. "Now there is a need to establish bridges to help solve the practical functions of everyday life and gradually establish degree of confidence between the government and opposition."

Amateur videos posted online Tuesday showed residents welcoming observers in the northern town of Maaret Musreen in the restive province of Idlib. They spray-painted two of the observers' cars with the words: "Down with Assad" and "Freedom Forever."

Investing: Not Just for Wall Street ? God, Money and Me...

If I asked you what an investor looks like, you might describe a cocky white dude in a pinstripe suit on Wall Street. You might be right, but you?d also be terribly wrong.

Investing is a great way to build wealth, but it?s not something that only ?rich people? do. Contrary to what you hear from the Occupy movement, investing isn?t solely the domain of the ?one percent.? In fact, if we use it right, investing can be the most powerful tool that you and I can to build solid financial lives.

If you?ve worked hard to master your money, then you?ve overcome debt, learned to budget your spending and started saving for emergencies and big purchases. All of those techniques are great for dealing with the money that you already have. But the ultimate goal of financial management is to make our money work for us. And when we invest well, we get to watch our money earn more money.

You may be thinking to yourself, ?That sounds fine, but I?m not really interested in getting wealthy. I don?t see the need to try to grow my money through investing.? Well, I understand where you?re coming from. It?s not a good thing to run after wealth for wealth?s sake. But investing isn?t about growing a big pile of money to sit on top of. We can use investing to help us gather money that is going to meet our needs later in life.

You see, there are a lot of things that we?ll have to pay for in life, but some of them are decades away from us right now. We?ve talked about using savings accounts to get money together for big purchases, and that?s a good strategy for anything that you may want to buy over the next five years or so. But if you?re trying to save for something that is more than five years away, you should think about investing the money, instead of simply saving it. When we invest, the money that we set aside can grow substantially; over time, the amount of money that comes from the growth can far exceed the original amount of money that we?ve invested out of our incomes.

We?re going to talk much more about investment in coming articles. But for today, let?s look at some of the common things that you should be investing your money for.

  • Retirement ? You probably won?t want to work forever. Once you retire, you won?t have a paycheck anymore, but you?ll still have living expenses. There was a time when many big companies offered pension plans that would pay their employees after they retired; those days, however, are all but gone. If you want to have enough money to live on in retirement, you need to be investing now.
  • Education ? The cost of college is staggering, and it continues to rise faster than the overall rate of inflation. It will cost tens of thousands of dollars to send a child to college, and perhaps much more if they decide to go to graduate school. If you plan to help pay for your kids? education, special educational investment plans allow you to grow some wealth to meet those needs when they reach college age.
  • Long-term giving ? Generous giving should play a big part in our financial lives. And while it?s good to give a big gift to a charity or a ministry organization, it?s even better to set up a system by which that organization can receive regular contributions year after year, even after we?re dead. We can use investment to set up trusts and endowments that will help to fund our favorite organizations in perpetuity.
  • Building an inheritance ? You may not desire riches for riches? sake, but God wants you to build a financial legacy to leave to your descendants when you die. Investing is one of the best ways to do that, and it can continue to pay off for your heirs long after you?re gone.

In coming articles, we?ll talk in detail about all of these different investment objectives, and help to sort out all of the confusing terms and ideas surrounding the idea of investment. Until then, though, think about this: If you had the potential to gather millions of dollars of wealth during your lifetime, what would you use it for?

You see, investing well turns ordinary people into millionaires. Isn?t it time that an investor looked like you?

Expert Home Improvement Advice You Can Put To Good Use! | Los ...

While painting, remember to protect the floors. This helps keep wet paint off of your flooring. A cheaper way to get this done is to layer old newspapers. Other options include plastic sheeting and paint cloths.

Take into consideration the look and feeling of other homes in your neighborhood, and try to keep that in mind as you are planning improvements. Will your home

look substantially different? If your project is daring, will you regret having a house that is radically different? Rather than making radical changes, improve the quality of your home through subtle nuances.

If you are needing a new roof, consider using white tile or shingles to replace the old roof. Dark tiles absorb sunlight, increasing heat in your attic. A light colored roof helps to reflect heat and will help lessen your air conditioning usage. This will allow you to avoid the stifling and oppressive heat whenever you need to use the attic.

Be honest with your contractor about how much you can afford if you are trying to do a large-scale project. Your honesty will ensure that the contractors use the right materials. Also, the contractors will be getting the most of out of their investment. Open communication has strong benefits for both the homeowner and the contractor.

Prior to tackling a major home improvement project by yourself, it might be wise to solicit a professional opinion. Professional advice can help you save a lot of money and time. If you do not ask a professional to begin with, you may screw up.

It is very important that the contractor estimates you get are all based on the exact same work to be done. Stick to one plan and present these reparations to each contractor. If you make changes, and get different estimates, you won?t be comparing the same thing.

Stop bugs from entering your home by sealing cracks. Apply caulk around windows and base boards. After your caulk is dry, the bugs will not be able to get in as easy, and your air will stay in better.

Make sure that the exterior of your home is accounted for when remodeling. Try improving the outside of your home by having a nicely mowed lawn with trimmed edges. Plant some nice bushes. Ensure your walkway is swept. Keep the outside of your home clean and the roof washed. Keep the windows looking shiny. That will make a great first impression on visitors who come your home.

As you are working to plan home renovations, do so during the first few months of the calendar year. You are likely going to be experiencing a tight budget due to the holiday expenses, so you will have a good idea of how much money you have to budget for the project. This is due to the fact that you will feel less stressed about the project if you take the time to budget for it while your funds are low.

If you are considering home improvements that will add to your home?s value, think about improving the porch. Porches invoke a sense of welcome when visitors arrive. You can spruce it up with a couple plants and fresh plants. This may be surprising, but a simple coat of paint can increase your home?s value far beyond the cost of the investment. Little things like this can go a very long way.

This article has presented just some of the many ways that homeowners can better prepare for home improvement projects. When you do your research and educate yourself, you will entirely eliminate the risks and fears many people consider inherent in home improvement projects. You will then be free to increase the comfort and value of your home.

Tackling home improvement projects may be a frustrating and drawn-out process; but when done right it could entirely modify the appear and feel of the house. Carrying out the remodeling your self can be practically impossible in case you don?t have the time or know-how to obtain it accomplished, so should you can afford to, I usually recommend just hiring a pro to manage it for you. The pros at Xtreme Remodeling happen to be helping property owners with their remodeling projects for years, and get the job done quickly with out charging an arm as well as a leg. It's amazing how often we can allow ourselves to become surrounded by stuff we really don't want or need. Yet we hold on to it and spend precious time caring for it. Over the last year I?ve been simplifying and minimizing our household.

It all started when we were going to move. I read all of the ?how to sell your house fast? information and the one thing all the experts agreed upon was that if you wanted to make your home more appealing to buyers you needed to get rid of the clutter. I didn?t realize how silly that statement was until I had done it.?

I made myself comfortable on the sofa and just took in my surroundings. I wasn?t really prepared for how I felt. As I laid back, enjoying my home, free of burdensome, dust-ridden knick-knacks and stuff I?d probably never use, an overwhelming peace come over me. I was enjoying my home. I had not done that in a while. That?s probably when it hit me. The fact that I was only content in my home when I?d prepared it for someone else. And, if I was able to live without this stuff for the duration of our home being on the market then did I really need it? If getting rid of all of that made my home more appealing to others? and me?then why keep it? Choose to surround yourself with things that you really love. Keeping the home simple saves time, energy, and space.

? If you've ever wanted to tear the 31st chapter of Proverbs out of your bible this book is for you. She is a wife, mom, business owner, seamstress, she serves the needy, speaks life and wisdom, and seems to be quite the major overachiever, perfectionist type. Except that...she's not.?

Robotic anchor will get a grip on space rocks

40 min.

To recover the riches embedded in asteroids, as the recently launched Planetary Ventures aims to do, miners will first need to latch their drills onto the surface of the space rocks. NASA scientists are at work on a robotic gripper that appears up to the task.

The gripper takes advantage of microspine technology pioneered by Aaron Parness, a member of the robotic vehicles and manipulator team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. The spines look like high-tech fish hooks and are able to easily attach and detach from just about any surface.

The first gripper shown off in the video below has a hierarchical configuration of microspines, with 16 independent carriages, each with 12 spines. When the contraption is engaged on a rock, the spines grip the surface, establishing an anchor strong enough to lift the 29-pound?rock off the ground.

A second gripper uses the same concept, but employs steel extension springs that are better suited to the frigid temperatures of space.?

The idea is to then use this gripper to latch onto an asteroid and send a drill bit through the middle of it to core out samples. You can see NASA using such a setup for asteroid sampling missions in the future. A scaled-up version could be something private?sector space miners would want to license.

"We have certainly discussed the asteroid mining potential within my research team," Parness told me in an email Thursday. "It's not our short term priority, but it is a possibility down the road, either for extracting rock with the drill or for creating an anchor strong enough to tow a small asteroid somewhere more desirable for processing."

He hasn't been in direct contact with Planetary Resources, the space mining venture announced in April.

Going forward, the team plans to outfit the grippers on a footed robot called Lemur IIB. You can imagine this robot scaling walls and scurrying across asteroids or around lava tubes on Mars in search of minerals to collect.

Parness presented a paper on the technology Wednesday at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.?

Del Piero scores as Juve celebrate title

By DANIELLA MATAR

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:40 p.m. ET May 13, 2012

MILAN (AP) -Alessandro del Piero scored in his last league appearance for Juventus as the newly crowned Serie A champion defeated Atalanta 3-1 on Sunday to become only the second Italian side to win the title by going the whole season unbeaten.

Del Piero signed off in style in front of the home fans as he doubled Juventus' lead in the 28th minute to cap a near 20-year career with the club.

"I had tears in my eyes several times," said Del Piero, who has yet to decide where he will play next season. "Everything was very moving, the bond with people goes above everything and I will always carry that with pride. I am happy and proud of all this.

"In certain aspects it is an incredibly beautiful day, there's a bit of sadness but it's right that way. I celebrated with the fans, with my teammates, doing what I like most, that's winning."

It was also emotional at San Siro as AC Milan bid farewell to club stalwarts Alessandro Nesta, Gennaro Gattuso and Filippo Inzaghi as well as Mark van Bommel.

Inzaghi scored to help Milan beat Novara 2-1. However, it was of little importance as Juventus was four points clear heading into the final game of the season and claimed its 28th league title last weekend after beating Cagliari 2-0 while AC Milan lost 4-2 to Inter Milan.

Udinese secured a spot in the Champions League qualifying stages for the second year in a row, winning 2-0 at Catania. Lazio, Napoli and Inter Milan will play in the Europa League.

"I don't know what to think," Inzaghi said. "When I was injured at Turin, I thought I wouldn't play again, then today I played my 300th game, in front of my fans and scored a goal in my trademark style. Everything still hasn't sunk in ... maybe the fact that others are leaving saved me because otherwise I don't know how I would have reacted if I was on my own.

"I hope that there are other champions that play with their hearts like us because these are great men and it's not so easy to find people like them. This year I always said that this a really great group, the best thing was my teammates, I have the shivers."

The city of Turin was in party mood with hundreds of thousands of fans gathered in the streets as Juventus celebrated its first title in nine years. Around 5,000 fans welcomed the team bus as it arrived at Juventus Stadium, decorated with three stars as the club still counts the two titles it was stripped of following the 2006 match-fixing scandal.

Antonio Conte's team became only the third side ever to go the entire season without losing a game. Milan also won the title unbeaten in 1992. Perugia went the entire 1978-79 season without losing a game but didn't win the league.

Juventus took the lead in the ninth minute when Marco Borriello forced his way into the area and set up Luca Marrone, who opened the scoring with a powerful right-footed shot.

And Del Piero, who has been at Juventus since 1993, scored his 289th goal for the club shortly before the half hour when he fired home from the edge of the area.

The Juve captain was substituted in the 57th minute to a standing ovation as the players and staff of both teams joined in with the resounding applause for the club icon.

The standing ovation and cheers continued even after Del Piero had left the field and the fomer Italy forward got back off the bench and walked around the pitch saluting the fans and gathering scarves which had been thrown down to him. Many fans were in tears.

Atalanta pulled one back when Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner turned Giacomo Bonaventura's cross into his own net but Andrea Barzagli restored Juve's two-goal advantage in stoppage time with a penalty.

The celebrations continued through the night, with an open-topped bus parade in front of hundreds of thousands of fans.

Before the game at Milan, Nesta, Gattuso, Inzaghi and Van Bommel were given a standing ovation as clips of important matches they had played in were shown on the big screen during the warmup and they were individually thanked over the loudspeaker.

Van Bommel has only been at Milan a year and a half, but the others have spent 10 years or more with the Rossoneri and they were in tears, as were several of their teammates. Three giant shirts, each one bearing one of the trio's names, were held up by fans at one end, while there were banners dedicated to them around the stadium.

It seemed as if Novara was going to ruin their farewells when Santiago Garcia gave it the lead in the 20th minute but Mathieu Flamini leveled 11 minutes after the break and Inzaghi scored the winner eight minutes from time. The former Juventus striker finishes his club career with 288 goals in 620 appearances in all competitions, including 126 in 300 games for Milan.

"I have never gone out onto the pitch without this obsession to score," Inzaghi said. "My mum watched me train yesterday and told me I was crazy because today should have been an exhibition, but I knew that I had to come on and score."

Udinese finished third, with Antonio Di Natale scoring his 23rd league goal of the season and Diego Fabbrini sealing the result. The club ended the campaign two points ahead of Lazio, which beat Inter Milan 3-1.

Diego Milito gave Inter the lead from the spot in first-half stoppage time before Libor Kozak, Antonio Candreva and Stefano Mauri scored for Lazio.

Napoli is also in Europe after a brace from Andrea Dossena gave it a 2-1 win over Siena. If Napoli wins the Italian Cup next week it will be in the Europa League itself and consign Lazio to the playoffs, but if it loses to Juventus, the positions will be reversed.

Inter will enter the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

At the other end of the table, Lecce will join Cesena and Novara in Serie B next season after it lost 1-0 at Chievo Verona.

Meanwhile, Roma won 3-2 at Cesena in Luis Enrique's last match in charge. Parma beat Bologna 1-0, Genoa won 2-0 against Palermo and Fiorentina drew 0-0 at home to Cagliari.

Kate Gosselin Cruise Canceled Due to Low Sales

Royal Caribbean's Kate Gosselin-hosted celebrity cruise has been canceled because of poor turnout and low ticket sales, according to reports.

The mother of eight was supposed to set sail from August 12-19 at a rate of $1,900-$3,175 per ticket. Astonishingly, there weren't many takers.

All cruise-goers have been fully refunded for the nixed event.

Kate Gosselin Facelift

Said a spokesman for the company of the Kate Gosselin cruise:

"Yes, that event has been canceled. We just didn't get the turnout that we desired and mutually we agreed that if we didn't get it, we would cancel."

"All ticket purchasers have been notified and been refunded. Some have chosen to continue on the cruise, but everyone was given the choice."

The reality star was apparently very apologetic at least.

"Kate asked for everybody's names, addresses and phone numbers and reached out to each one personally," the spokeswoman added.

"It was nothing to do with Kate Gosselin ... we needed to hit certain numbers to make it work and they just weren't where they needed to be."

It's unclear how many tickets were actually purchased.

What does Mitt Romney's new ad say about his strategy? (+video)

Don't look for Mitt Romney in his new ad, 'Silence.' It's all about being jobless and 'suffering in silence.' The Romney teamwants to keep the focus on 'the Obama economy.'

How does Mitt Romney want persuadable voters to think about the upcoming presidential election? Yes, we know he?s emphasizing the economy, and putting voters back to work, and so forth. What we?re getting at here is the sort of emotional context the Romney camp hopes will prevail among the swing electorate in November.

As it happens, we think Mr. Romney?s latest campaign ad, titled ?Silence,? is a pretty good guide to what might be his overall strategy here. So as the late great Washington sportscaster George Michael used to say, ?Let?s go to the videotape!?

The ad begins with "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley saying, ?Tonight, new evidence the economic recovery is slowing." Then it moves swiftly, cutting between clips of reporters bemoaning the state of the job market and short bursts of President Obama giving a speech.

The Obama appearances are so brief as to be mere impressions. At one point you hear him say, ?Ask if you?re better off than you were before..."

Then the montage accelerates, and the kind of rising music featured in horror movie trailers comes up. You hear only phrases ? ?We?re not seeing a ton of sunshine,? and so forth. Just as the tension peaks, we see not a slasher attack but Mr. Obama again, this time saying, ?It?s not just how we?re doing today. It?s how we?ll be doing tomorrow."

Boom. Halfway through the ad, the music and the clips stop.

?Today, millions of Americans are suffering in silence,? comes on the screen in large white letters.

What follows is a succession of quotes, interposed over shots of people looking very worried, in dead silence.

?Job growth not nearly fast enough to recover from the Great Recession,? says one quote. ?More than 340,000 workers dropped out of the labor force,? says another.

The ad ends with this: ?This is the Obama economy. It isn?t working.?

For those of you who don?t obsess over this sort of thing frame-by-frame, as if it were an ?Avengers? outtake, we?ll make a couple of Politics 101 points.

Where's Mitt? Challengers generally want elections to be referendums on the incumbent. They themselves are simply the replacement, a relief pitcher out of sight in the bullpen, waiting to be called. That?s why there?s lots of Obama in this ad, but no pictures of a certain former Massachusetts governor. The only Romney reference comes at the end, when his last name appears in small type as having paid for the message.

How are you feeling right now? Romney might be better off if voters cast ballots based on their emotions of the moment. He likely would get more support from folks who are worried about their present circumstances ? after all, the unemployment rate is at a daunting 8.1 percent. Millions of Americans who still have jobs go to bed at night worried about losing them. That?s why this ad ratchets up the anxiety level ? or reminds voters of how high their anxiety level already is.

In contrast, Obama wants voters to think about a longer time frame. His message could be summed up as something along the lines of, ?Remember how bad it was back when I took this job? I inherited a mess, and it?s getting better. Let?s not change horses in the middle of the race.?

Generally speaking, it?s the employment trend line, not the absolute unemployment rate, that matters most in presidential elections. It remains to be seen whether the current ?meh? job growth numbers will generate enough optimism among voters to convince them to give the incumbent another chance.
