Guillermo del Toro co-writing sequel to still unreleased "Pacific Rim"

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Guillermo del Toro has more monsters in his future.

The Mexican-born horror maestro has been tapped to co-write a sequel to his still unreleased "Pacific Rim" before the public has even gotten a chance to buy tickets to the first installment. He will partner on the script with Travis Beacham, said a spokesman for the film's producer, Legendary Pictures.

"Pacific Rim" centers on a group of soldiers who use giant robots to fight giant sea monsters. That may sound like a simple concept, but as anyone who has seen del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" knows, he finds fresh ways to make things go bump in the night.

The film stars "Sons of Anarchy" actors Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman, Idris Elba of "The Wire," and "Horrible Bosses" funnyman Charlie Day. It hits theaters on July 12, with Warner Bros. distributing.

Del Toro said at Comic-Con last summer that he already had some ideas percolating for a possible follow-up to "Pacific Rim."

"We always leave ideas that were in the first draft as you go along. You know, either a set piece that was great but too expensive, an idea that was really bright, but it couldn't quite fit the structure," del Toro said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"So we have a little stash of stuff we wanted to do that we didn't get to do," he added. "So if that's a possibility, A) I would be very happy to do a sequel, but B) a lot of these ideas, set pieces and all that, actually have in them a really good seed for a sequel."

The Hollywood Reporter first broke del Toro and Beacham's involvement in a "Pacific Rim" sequel.
