A Blueprint For Creating A Secure Career | Come Recommended

The following is a guest post by John Li.

How do you create a secure career, exactly? Students, job seeker,s and professionals in all walks of life are presently asking this question. Job security depends on the economic climate, overall business conditions, and the job seeker?s professional skills and experience. As a seeker of employment, you are only able to control one of these factors: skills and experience. In previous generations, the prevailing school of thought was to find employment at one company and stay there until you retire.

According to Brendan Cruickshank, VP of the job-posting site Juju, this notion is entirely outdated in today?s business world. Job stability today no longer requires remaining with the same employer or even the same industry, according to the Depauw University?s career consultant Steve Langerud. What is the first component of a blueprint for creating a secure career? Cruickshank believes it is, in fact, education.

Diversify Your Education

Specializing in a single career pathway is still a wise decision; however, in today?s economic and business climate, having a more diversified educational background is gaining prevalence. Cruickshank states that employees now change employers seven to eight times during their career. Some of these changes are within the same industry, while others are different. By diversifying your education, you can be prepared to switch industries if your current industry is no longer secure. Below are three degrees and certifications that will help ensure lasting job security:

Information Technology Degree.?Whether you pursue a bachelor?s or master?s level degree, rest assured it will be put to good use. From 2010 to 2020, fields that utilize this degree are expected to grow 18-26 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This degree prepares you for a career as a computer support specialist, network administrator, or graphic design. Every company and organization has a need for a technology expert, meaning an employee with an information technology degree will always be an asset.

Pursue CFA Certification.?Becoming a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) is another path to pursue that will lead to secure employment. A CFA prep course will prepare you for the financial industry. You will learn how to analyze financial data, manage portfolios, and perform a variety of other tasks aimed at growing clients? portfolios. While becoming a CFA is a long and arduous journey, the rewards are immense. You will become a member of a community of CFAs that help support each other. This makes finding employment simpler than other career fields.

Masters of Business Administration (MBA).?This time-honored degree prepares graduates for the world of business. It can be applied toward a variety of careers, including real estate, financial markets, and executive management. Job seekers who have earned an MBA will have a wide scope of career opportunities depending on their goals and other skills.

Understand Occupational Supply and Demand

Supply and demand is an economic principle that states the availability of a product and market demand for a product will dictate its price. This principle translates directly to the occupational market as well ? the fewer employees that possess sought-after skills, the more positions will be available to them. They will likely earn a highly competitive wage, too. The second component of the secure career blueprint is leveraging your education to gain in-demand job experience and skills.

The Bureau of Labor statistics annually releases a report that details the most needed fields and positions. Historically, these reports have included the below industries:

  • Information Technology Specialists
  • Veterinary Technicians
  • Nurses and Doctors
  • Government Administration
  • Business Management

The above industries are presently considered secure, as they are anticipated to experience a high level of growth during. Use your education to gain job experience in a secure, in-demand industry.

Develop Expert Level Job Seeking Skills

The final component of the secure career blueprint is developing job-seeking skills. You may have sought-after skills and a diversified education, but you must know how to market it to find employment. Being able to find employment allows you to switch employers and industries at will. This skill establishes a secure career that is independent from market and business conditions. Seth Kaufman, writer for the employment finding website Brand Yourself, provides the below tips on finding employment:

  • Develop an Impressive Resume.?Understand that employers receive hundreds of resumes for every job posting. Ensure yours is no more than one page long and utilizes captivating bullet-pointed statements.
  • Be Self-Motivated.?You must take it upon yourself to seek employment; rarely do job seekers receive unsolicited job offers.
  • Be Confident.?Once you have landed an interview, walk in with the attitude that you are exactly what they are looking for. Be upbeat and positive with your answers. Also, ask them a number of questions. You are also deciding if you want to work for them, after all.

A Secure Career Is Within Your Grasp

Some consider job security an unattainable goal, as there are many factors that create it. However, job security is not impossible to obtain. By diversifying your education, developing in-demand skills and knowing how to find employment ? a secure career can be yours.
