Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay, may temporarily replace Hewlett-Packard CEO Leo Apotheker. Meg Whitman joined the HP board in January.
Hewlett-Packard Co. shares jumped Wednesday after reports that the technology company's board is mulling the removal of CEO Leo Apotheker, who has been on the job for less than a year.
Citing two unnamed people "familiar with the matter," Bloomberg reported Wednesday that HP's board intends to hold a meeting to discuss getting rid of Apotheker, 58.
The CEO had started at HP on Nov. 1 after HP ousted the previous CEO, Mark Hurd, following an ethics scandal. Since Apotheker's arrival, though, HP's stock has plummeted, continuing a decline that began with Hurd's departure.
One of the sources said it's possible that Apotheker would be replaced ? at least temporarily ? with Meg Whitman, former CEO of online marketplace eBay Inc. Whitman joined HP's board in January.
If Apotheker is asked to leave HP, it would be the second time he has been fired from a CEO post. He left his former employer, German business software maker SAP AG, after less than two years as a CEO amid a customer revolt over a price hike and growing employee dissatisfaction.
HP spokesman Michael Thacker said the company, based in Palo Alto, California, does not comment on rumors or speculation.
HP shares rose $2.27, or 10 percent, to $24.74 in afternoon trading. In the past year, the stock has traded from $22.13 to $49.39.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? President Barack Obama declared Wednesday that there could be no shortcut to peace between Israel and the Palestinians, as he sought to head off a United Nations showdown over Palestinian statehood that's becoming a thorny diplomatic problem for his administration.
"Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations ? if it were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now," the president told the U.N. General Assembly. "Ultimately, it is the Israelis and the Palestinians who must live side by side.
"Ultimately, it is the Israelis and the Palestinians ? not us ? who must reach agreement on the issues that divide them."
Obama forcefully defended his opposition to the Palestinians' plan to seek statehood recognition from the U.N. Security Council, though without directly calling on the Palestinians to drop the bid, or offering a clear path forward in its place. With the limits of U.S. influence on the moribund peace process never more clear, Obama had no new demands for the Israelis, either, beyond repeating his position that both sides deserved their own state and security and should return to the negotiating table to achieve it.
Behind the scenes, U.S. diplomats were working furiously to get Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to moderate his plans, but it was not clear they would be successful.
"Peace depends upon compromise among peoples who must live together long after our speeches are over, and our votes have been counted," Obama said. "That is the path to a Palestinian state."
The push by the Palestinians threatens to isolate Israel even further, and divide the U.S. from allies in the Arab world who support the statehood resolution.
For Obama, it would be another blow to his tattered hopes of brokering a Middle East peace. And it would amount to a political setback at home, where Republican opponents say Obama hasn't sufficiently supported Israel, and accuse him of mishandling Middle East diplomacy.
After the speech, which was friendly to Israel's position, Obama went into a meeting with Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. There he affirmed the U.S. commitment to Israel's security. Later in the day he was to meet with Abbas, where Obama was expected to privately ask him to essentially drop the move for statehood recognition after Abbas delivers a formal letter of intent to the U.N. on Friday.
At the same time, U.S. officials are conceding that they probably cannot prevent Abbas from moving forward with a request to the U.N. Security Council for full Palestinian membership. The Obama administration has pledged to veto any Palestinian statehood bid, arguing that only direct peace negotiations, not a U.N. vote, would allow the Palestinians to achieve the benefits of statehood.
It's a much different situation than Obama had hoped for a year ago, when he wanted to herald by now a negotiated agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians. U.S. persuasion and pressure failed to achieve that result and now peace again looks distant. Obama put the blame for that on Israel and the Palestinians.
"Despite extensive efforts by America and others, the parties have not bridged their differences," Obama said.
Obama's remarks on Israel and the Palestinians came in a speech that also swept up the convulsions of what Obama called "a remarkable year." He talked about the fall of Moammar Gadhafi's dictatorship in Libya, the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, the uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere, and the emergence of South Sudan as the world's newest nation.
"The humiliating grip of corruption and tyranny is being pried open," Obama said. "Dictators are on notice. Technology is putting power in the hands of the people."
The president talked of hope for the future, and a striving for freedom in "a time of transformation."
Yet the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians looked as intractable as ever.
A new approach being considered would see the "quartet" of Mideast peace mediators ? the U.S., European Union, United Nations and Russia ? issue a statement addressing both Palestinian and Israeli concerns and setting a timetable for a return to the long-stalled peace talks, officials close to the diplomatic talks said.
Israel would have to accept its pre-1967 borders with land exchanges as the basis for a two-state solution, and the Palestinians would have to recognize Israel's Jewish character if they were to reach a deal quickly, officials close to the talks said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing diplomacy.
In an appearance with Netanyahu before their private meeting, Obama reiterated his call for direct peace talks as the only solution, saying "actions in the United Nations will mean neither statehood or self-determination for the Palestinians."
By Obama's side, Netanyahu condemned the Palestinian move, calling it a "shortcut" that "will not succeed."
"I think the Palestinians want to achieve a state in the international community," Netanyahu said, "but they're not prepared yet to give peace to Israel in return."
Netanyahu also praised Obama's stance on Israel, an endorsement that could help the U.S. president fend off criticism from Republicans.
"I think that standing your ground, taking this position of principle ? which is also I think the right position to achieve peace ? I think this is a badge of honor. And I want to thank you for wearing that badge of honor," Netanyahu said.
Obama was welcomed to the U.N. hall with polite applause from the delegations gathered for his address. There was little response from the audience throughout his speech, even on the hot-button issue of Middle East peace.
Facing a partisan struggle over deficits and jobs at home, Obama spoke to problems in the world economy, and made a brief plug for his new plans to create jobs, already running into Republican opposition on Capitol Hill.
"We must take urgent and coordinated action once more," he said. "In a global economy, nations will rise, or fall, together."
But Obama returned repeatedly to one theme: "Peace is hard," he said several times. "Peace is hard, but we know that it is possible."
September 20 - The World Squash Federation (WSF) today launched a new adaptable logo, intended, officials claim, to achieve a clear, consistent visual identity that not only emphasises the position and role of the federation, but also has the flexibility to be used in a variety of ways in respect of the organisation's programmes and initiatives.
The new branding uses the lines of the front wall of a squash court to give a visual cue towards squash and features strong lines and colours as part of a full rebranding that will ensure instant recognition of WSF.
"We are a bold organisation and want to reflect that in how we look," WSF's President N Ramachandran said.
"In simple terms, WSF is a brand and we have to present this effectively to our stakeholders and all to whom we relate."
Andrew Shelley, chief executive at the WSF, added: "The flexibility of design and colour is important, so that we can give separate identities to all our schemes.
"We are heartened by positive reaction from those who have seen the designs so far and we hope that the entire world of squash will be similarly upbeat now that it is released."
The WSF is currently pursuing a bid to get the sport onto the Olympic programme for 2020.
As well as the introduction of the new branding, the federation recently announced that it is opening an office in the Maison Du Sport International in Lausanne to be close to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and has appointed Mike Lee's company Vero Communications to help raise the profile of the bid.

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks fell on Monday but staged a late comeback after fears of a looming Greek debt default diminished on news of a possible deal to advance new bailout funds to Greece.
Stocks spent most the session sharply lower after European leaders disappointed investors by failing to come up with any new solutions to the euro zone's sovereign debt crisis over the weekend.
However, a Greek finance ministry official said after talks on Monday with the European Union and International Monetary Fund that the country was near an agreement with international lenders to continue receiving money.
"For the time being it looks as though there is hope the conversation is going to take on a more positive and constructive tone," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.
"A little reason for a little buoyancy in the market, but we've seen this before."
Energy and financial stocks were among the worst performers of the session. The PHLX oil service sector index (.OSX) dropped 1.7 percent as oil prices settled down 2.6 percent to $85.70 on demand worries.
The KBW bank index (.BKX) fell 2.8 percent following a steep decline in European banks on worries euro zone leaders won't be able to prevent debt-stricken Greece from sliding into default. Citigroup Inc (C.N) slipped 4.4 percent to $27.71.
International lenders told Greece on Monday it must shrink its public sector and improve tax collection to avoid default within weeks as investors, unnerved by political setbacks in Europe dumped risky euro zone assets.
The Federal Reserve will begin a two-day meeting on Tuesday and is poised to increase downward pressure on longer-term interest rates this week in a bid to accelerate a sputtering U.S. recovery.
"It's the Greece thing and the Fed meeting this week. We've seen a lot of write-up on this Operation Twist, a lot of it may be baked in," said Terry Morris, senior equity manager for National Penn Investors Trust Company in Reading, Pennsylvania.
The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) dropped 108.08 points, or 0.94 percent, to 11,401.01. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) lost 11.92 points, or 0.98 percent, to 1,204.09. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) edged down 9.48 points, or 0.36 percent, to 2,612.83.
In the "twist" operation, traders expect the Fed to try to stimulate growth by pushing down longer-term debt yields by buying bonds and selling short-term debt. A Fed statement is expected on Wednesday at the end of the meetings.
Doubts about U.S. fiscal policy were also spoiling the appetite for stocks. President Barack Obama laid out a $3 trillion plan to cut U.S. deficits by raising taxes on the rich, but Republicans mocked it as a political stunt, signaling the proposal has little chance of becoming law.
Apple Inc (AAPL.O) helped curb declines on the Nasdaq as shares hit an all-time high of $413.23 earlier before closing up 2.8 percent to $411.63. An analyst said the stock had broken through technical levels, and Morgan Stanley included the iPad maker in a list of companies capable of increasing or initiating dividends.
Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N) was one of the worst performers on the Dow, off 1.5 to $84.60 after Raymond James cut its rating on the world's largest construction equipment maker, citing slowing global economic growth.
Volume was light, with about 7.11 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, slightly below the daily average of 7.9 billion.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by 2,310 to 667, while on the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers 2,030 to 552.

Young love is a flame;very pretty, often very hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. -Henry Ward Beecher
When young people who are barely out of their teens fall in love adults tend to trivialize their so-called relationships by being judgemental and often uncaring. While they are parents who are supportive and open in this area, this article would be touch on the effects on trivializing the experience of a first love that transpires during developmental years.
This subject has been a hot on my mind lately as I too, have been a young teen back in the day, with the only exception being technology wasn?t that evolved that I could have been way more wildly influenced by it than say,the traditional media and peer pressure.
| Credit:loliator.deviantart.com
Kids today are like miniature adults as their minds take in all of the info about love relationships cued from their favorite celebrities that are as young (or even younger) as them as blue prints they use to begin emulate and keep up in ways they approach their life. Let?s also face the fact that our contemporary urban young teens and tweens are falling in love or having crushes at a rate that is relatively higher than back in the olden golden days of their parent?s generations.
Young love relationships are indeed challenging as teenagers are still finding for that stable sense of identity within themselves. They may seem to know everything there is to know about ?love?intellectually based on their best friends?relationships, films and the music scene but if that?s the only source of advice,we?re doomed. However,it is through direct experience that our teens learn more realistically about falling in love and being in a relationship with another person. This unfortunately entails cuts and bruises to the heart and mind.
| Credit:thebestcabinboy.deviantart.com
Being that the teen phase is marked by hormonal ups and downs,it?s only natural that young love is an intense experience that can threaten to throw the course of a teen life if he or she is not taught to approach it in a balanced attitude.
Love can rock your world no matter what your age is but when it happens at a young age,it can easily turn into a giant rollercoaster ride where senses and reasons can seem to elude a young person particularly when love becomes an all-encompassing obsession.
| Credit:330cookie077.deviantart.com
This is where parents and guardians play an extremely vital role. Instread of viewing your young child?s latest love interest with her/his classmate with a major consternation and an impulsive need to say??you?re too young, this will never last?,learn to be there in a non judgemental way if you ever want to keep a line of communication open with your teen.
It will be a big difference as you can play an active role without appearing to be inserting yourself as a know-it-all-authority that seems to be unpopular among the young crowd. You can act as an anchor to your child?s life, reminding him/her to develop self confidence and a strong identity that is also independent from the relationship,so that if it spirals down, your child still has a ?life?for which he/she can safely go back to.

Being there by your teen?s side when she/he gets to experience the first love of their lives strengthens the parent-child relationship unlike any other.

While the majority of parents do no advocate love relationships to start young in a backdrop of a country such as Malaysia, the more we pretend that it is not happening, the more we delude ourselves so much so at the expense of developing a nurturing and deeper understanding connection with our children.
Let?s start reminding ourselves that we were teenagers once and we too have had intense crushes and fallen in love even when age and our own parents dictates that we OUGHT not to.
This time, let us be by our children side and be the lantern that light the way.

Let young love set an opportunity for our teens and tweens to learn more about themselves and the power of a relationship when approached with the right mind-set.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The United States pressed ahead Monday with intensive talks aimed at averting a showdown over Palestinian statehood at the United Nations this week, asking key Muslim ally Turkey not to allow its rift with Israel to grow wider and hoping to coax cooperation from a noncommittal Russia.
As President Barack Obama and other world leaders headed to New York for the annual U.N. General Assembly session, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met her Turkish counterpart and was to see Russia's foreign minister later in the day.
A senior U.S. official said Clinton had encouraged Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to repair badly strained ties with Israel and play a positive role in resolving the Palestinian issue that is looming large over the General Assembly that opens on Wednesday. A second senior U.S. official added that Washington was particularly concerned about frayed Turkey-Israel ties because the Palestinian confrontation has raised the stakes for further confrontation.
Officials said they would like the Turks, who support the Palestinian bid, to lower tensions with Israel by toning down what has been sharp rhetoric regarding the Jewish state in recent weeks. This, the officials said, could improve the atmosphere at the United Nations.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Clinton's meetings were private.
Clinton seemed to be referring to a Turkish pledge to send warships to back up any future aid convoy attempting to break the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip, but officials said that wasn't specifically discussed.
Israelis fear the statehood bid could further hamper their international standing, having lost a longtime ally in Hosni Mubarak in Egypt and its close partnership with Turkey, the only Muslim nation in NATO.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas vowed not to back down despite "tremendous pressure" on the bid for U.N. recognition and membership in the world body.
Abbas insisted that the statehood goal should not derail a resumption of direct negotiations. The U.S. views the Palestinian plan as counterproductive and a potential roadblock to the peace effort. The U.S. has vowed to veto the measure in the U.N. Security Council.
The pressure from the United States and other quarters was matched by feverish efforts to offer the Palestinian leadership a viable plan forward, conscious that the current state of negotiations with the Jewish state is leading nowhere.
Envoys from the Quartet of Mideast peacemakers ? the U.S., U.N., European Union and Russia ? were planning to meet for a second straight day in New York. Clinton was set to speak about the logjam with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and various other talks were occurring throughout the city.
The frenetic diplomacy was happening as Abbas arrived Monday in New York to take his case to the Security Council's 15 members, nine of whose support ? and no vetoes ? would be needed for passage.
President Barack Obama arrives Monday evening, without a clear plan to successfully persuade the Palestinians to drop their bid. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to arrive Wednesday, when the U.N. gathering formally opens.
Obama is scheduled to meet Tuesday with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York, and a bipartisan group of senators is urging the U.S. leader to "send a strong message that the U.S. will forever remain committed to Israel's security."
In their joint letter to Obama, they wrote: "It appears that Turkey is shifting to a policy of confrontation, if not hostility, towards our allies in Israel and we urge you to mount a diplomatic offensive to reverse this course."
Turkey has suspended military ties with Israel, expelled top Israeli diplomats and threatened additional actions unless the Jewish state apologizes for last year's deadly raid on a Turkish aid flotilla. Israel has stopped short of an apology, only expressing its regret.
Turkey also has lobbied nations to support the Palestinian bid for recognition and U.N. membership.
Turkey's pursuit of an increasingly muscular foreign policy since the June re-election of its religiously rooted government has worried American officials, who've seen disagreements with Turkey also spread into economic issues.
The Palestinians are frustrated by their inability to win from Israel concessions such as a freeze on settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. And with bilateral talks with Israel failing, they see the U.N. route as the only viable route for progress in the short term.
To address the Palestinian concerns, Western officials have discussed the possibility of including some timeframes, however vague, in any statement put out by the Quartet, officials said. These would focus on the restart of Israeli-Palestinian talks and signs of tangible progress once negotiations begin.
The timeframes wouldn't be deadlines, as such, but are aimed at addressing the Palestinian desire to see quick action. The offer would come with an unchanged message that Washington would veto the Palestinian bid at the Security Council for U.N. recognition and membership, but at the very least it would represent a dignity-saving compromise for Abbas' U.S.-backed government.

Ever since the Internet became available to mankind, it has altered the face of the trade and commerce industry. Organizations have been able to lure more customers no matter their distance from each other, thanks to the internet. Being one mouse-click away from consumers also mean having extra income for many organizations. Because of the advantages internet commerce offers, a lot of entrepreneurs are bringing their businesses online.
The World Wide Web can hold many companies. There is a place for everybody there. But just like the real world, it can become too crowded. Many companies that provide the same merchandise or services are there, attempting to outdo one another. New businesses will have a difficult time penetrating the online world, where it is just as competitive as the real world. The ferocity of online competition, with some of the businesses already famous players with numerous followers, makes it hard for newcomers to win.
The solution is Internet marketing for the beginners in the industry. It helps them get into the online industry and vie against veterans by offering and promoting their business through online advertising and marketing.
Each marketing strategy applied on the Internet is the same as those applied in the real world. The billboards, posters, and streamers placed on buildings, bridges, and other establishments are similar to the billboards, posters, and signs placed on the top, bottom, and sides of a website. Those flyers and brochures distributed on the streets and in the malls are comparable to the emails sent to various recipients by different companies as a direct marketing strategy.
As a way to truly exist online, you must take up the first pages of search engine results, such as Google and Yahoo. This is because most surfers just notice and go to the website of a business if it is on the first pages of a search engine outcome. That is what SEO companies or Search Engine Optimization guarantees: a first-page ranking.
A company just starting to embark on Internet selling does not need to be eternally trapped at the bottom of the pile. With the aid of Internet marketing, it can make its way to the top by getting in touch with their intended market and boosting their profits.

?Which is better investment in Gurgaon properties, residential or commercial?? Being a property consultant in the region, I have been confronting this query from the chunk of my clientele. Often it may leave you in perplexity as it happened when my boyhood pal Simon quizzed me the other day during his visit of me at my residence at DLF Phase IV. This conundrum kept my confused and my chubby chum was bemused. Well, it is a medley of varying factors that determine which property is better. In a primary residential locale, say DLF I or II, the scope for a luxury residential unit is better than a commercial one. On the other hand, in the prime commercial location of the city, residential premises are less attractive. This is a locality-wise parameter. There are also other deciding factors to be reckoned with while selecting property units in Gurgaon.
While you consider whether residential or commercial is better property investment in Gurgaon, time factor also is to be considered. For instance, during the recent recession and the resultant slump in the Gurgaon real estate market, commercial properties in the city were in a downward trend. Also, luxury apartment and villas also had less demand during the period. But middle and lower level residential units did not show much fluctuation in price. Also, it is estimated that in the coming years there will be a higher demand for middle-income-level residential units. This is due to the better pay-scale in the Government sector and a growing corporate sector in the region. Further, non-resident Indians who have been working in the Middle East return in big numbers due to the fall out of recession.
Thus the analysis as to whether residential or commercial property in Gurgaon,is the better investment, would reveal that both commercial and residential properties are good investment options in the region. It is a matter of time and locality that determine which is better at a particular place and time. Further, the city is in a great expansion phase and new areas have been acquired and are under development. In the new locations, the prospective investor should make intelligent assessments as to the spots where landmark developments would take place and make investments accordingly. For example, if there is provision for a public transport terminal or any point where regular public gathering is expected, investment in suitable commercial units will be ideal. Similarly, in the suburban sector investment in residential sector for villas and club houses would be more viable than investment in commercial projects.

Catabolism: also called catabolism that is part of the organism that are able to decompose form their own material and release the energy in the process of change, and then excretes the waste out of the body in process of change.
Concept: Metabolism is the general term for all chemical changes in living beings, which are usually carried out by the catalysis function of enzyme. It includes two aspects that are the material metabolism and energy metabolism.
One of the roles of meizitang botanical slimming soft gel in helping losing weight is that it increase the rate of metabolism and makes the body release the energy faster. Then what is metabolism? Why it is so important to living beings?
Material metabolism: it is the process that organisms exchange substance with the external environment and transformation of material within the body. It is divided into two categories as follows: Intake of nutrients from the outside world and transform them into their own. And this is called assimilation. Their own storage of some substances is broken down and metabolic wastes are taken away from body. And this is called catabolism. Energy metabolism: it is the process that organisms exchange energy with the external environment and transformation of energy within the body. It is divided into two categories as follows: Storing the energy is named assimilation. Release of energy is named catabolism. In the metabolic process, there is assimilation as well as catabolism. Therefore, if one wants to lose weight, the meizitang should be greater than the assimilation. That is the work of the meizitang botanical slimming soft gel to enhance the catabolism.
Heavy drinkers may die needlessly in house firesPublic release date: 15-Sep-2011 [ | E-mail | Share ]

PISCATAWAY, NJ People who drink heavily may increase their risk of dying in house fires that should otherwise have been escapable, a new study suggests.
The findings, reported in the September issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, highlight one of the less-recognized dangers of downing too much alcohol -- especially in combination with smoking.
Looking at coroners' records for 95 fire victims, Australian researchers found that 58% had positive results on blood alcohol tests, often with very high alcohol levels. And those intoxicated victims were less likely than sober ones to have had obstacles preventing their escape from the fire -- like barred windows or an exit route that was blocked by the fire.
The implication, the researchers say, is that at least some intoxicated victims might have survived had they been roused in time.
Most of the victims in the study were alone at the time of the fire, and many were asleep (including close to half of intoxicated victims). So it's possible that well-placed smoke detectors -- or having other, sober people in the house -- would have protected some, according to lead researcher Dorothy Bruck, Ph.D., of Victoria University in Melbourne.
But probably the biggest issue is the combination of heavy drinking and smoking. In this study, victims who had been drinking were about 4.5 times more likely to have died in fires that involved "smoking materials," like discarded cigarettes.
"A key message is that smoking and drinking together constitute a high-risk activity, even in your own home," Bruck says.
Aside from not combining drinking and smoking, people may be able to lessen their fire risks in other ways, according to Bruck.
One way would be to always have someone else in your home who stays sober, even if you're having a few drinks. Also, it's a good idea to have smoke detectors in bedrooms or living areas, rather than just hallways, Bruck says. In general, smoke alarms are less effective at rousing people who've been drinking heavily.
"Our research has also shown that certain changes to improve the sound that smoke alarms make, and better alarm locations, may arouse more sleeping intoxicated people in the case of a fire," Bruck says. But, she adds, experts don't know how loud smoke alarms, even with the improved signal, need to be to wake a person with very high blood alcohol levels.
Another potential way to prevent fire deaths is to use so-called fire-safe cigarettes, Bruck notes. The cigarettes self-extinguish if a smoker sets one down and forgets about it or falls asleep while smoking.
All of the fatalities in the current study were among adults who died in house fires in the Australian state of Victoria between 1998 and 2006. The high percentage of intoxicated victims (58%) is consistent with what's been seen in studies from the United States, Canada and Europe.
In recent U.S. studies, anywhere from 40% to 55% of people who died in fires were intoxicated, based on blood alcohol tests.

Moving to Wimbledon could be the answer if you are looking to buy or rent in an upmarket area of London which offers one of the best lifestyles in the capital. It is particularly popular with families and young professionals. Property to rent or buy in Wimbledon isn't cheap but there is a wide selection on offer - impressive detached homes, large Victorian houses, lovely cottages and terraces, funky apartments and feature-full flats. Location is key - Wimbledon Village is one of the most expensive areas in London but other parts, such as Wimbledon, Raynes Park and Southfields, are more affordable.
The average property price is around the ?600,000 mark with a huge range around that - from the mid ?100,000s to some ?7 million! When it comes to property to rent in Wimbledon, depending on where you are and the size and style of the property you choose, a three to four bedroom house will cost around ?600+ a week to rent, whilst good two-bedroom flats to rent in Wimbledon in a good location will be in the region of ?400 a week.
Wimbledon has a host of amenities on the doorstep whilst also providing great transport links into the City and elsewhere. Centre Court is a new shopping centre with department stores, well-known high street brands, supermarkets and chain restaurants. Wimbledon Village really does retain a village vibe and offers more exclusive shopping options. As you'd expect, there are plenty of restaurants, caf?s and delis where food-lovers can indulge and if you like a tipple, there's everything from a classic ale in a traditional pub to a colourful cocktail in a cool bar. There are cinemas, theatres and galleries and a range of local clubs and societies. Leisure facilities in the area are good too, not least thanks to the Common.
Wimbldeon and Putney Commons consist of over 1000 acres of green space in between Wimbledon, Putney and Kingston-upon-Thames. They are made up of woodland, scrubland, heathland and recreation areas, as well as nine ponds. The whole area is unfenced and so is open to the public all day and all night, all year round. There is also an 18-hole golf course, cricket pitches, playing fields, athletics facilities and even 16 miles of horse-riding tracks. And if you're really lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a Womble or two...
There is a good range of state and private schools.
Of course, Wimbledon is known world-over for being home to the oldest (and arguably, most prestigious) tennis tournament. The Championships Wimbledon, is an event that has been held at the All England Tennis Club since 1877 and is by today very much part of the British sporting and social calendar.
Transport wise, Wimbledon is well served (if you'll excuse the pun). Wimbledon tube station is at the end of the District Line, whilst South Wimbledon tube station is on the Northern Line. Wimbledon train station has services to Clapham Junction, Waterloo and also out to the south west. In addition, a tram service operates between Wimbledon station and New Addington via Mitcham Junction and West and East Croydon railway stations.
So, let's face it, if we could, we'd all be moving to Wimbledon!
The winter season has fewer units on the market, and sellers tend to need to move from their property. You can use that to your advantage to get a favorable deal.
Winter has fewer buyers in the market. Looking for a home in the winter can be inconvenient, and people are less likely to move. Families also tend to be on a September to June cycle because they are unwilling to move their children to a new town in the middle of the school year. Fewer buyers means less competition.
Lenders also usually have fewer loans to process and less paperwork to deal with (though this can change quickly if rates fluctuate). With lenders less hassled, you can expect a smoother process to get approved for a mortgage. But, as reported in Bankrate.com, there are exceptions to this rule, most notably in warmer parts of the country (especially Florida), ski towns, and in parts of the country where demand is so strong that it will not slacken during the winter months.
Finally, as all savvy shoppers know, after the holiday season comes the season of bargain opportunities. This includes houses, as well.
Tot Tuesday is a weekly feature where I highlight a special kids activity, frugal recipe for kids, kids tutorial, etc.
My son is 4. This year, he seems to be Halloween obsessed already. We recently went to a Halloween store that popped up randomly in a strip mall near us (does that only happen in Texas? Random Halloween shops taking up?abandoned?buildings for 2 months every year?), and it was so exciting to see him push a bit past his fears and loudly assure us (as well as himself) that it was all just pretend and oh so silly!
Still, he?s 4. A lot of Halloween decorations are a bit too spooky for him. I also have a 2 year old girl, who is mega tough, but not a fan of ghosts and ghouls (unless they have fabulous shoes of course).
This left me with a bit of a dilemma. I want to deck the FFF Family halls with awesome Halloween decorations, but I want them to be cute and fun for my kids. Not scary or spooky.
So I Swagbucks searched ( ) some kid friendly Halloween decor craft ideas and came up with a bunch of goodies! I went armed with a coupon to my nearest crafting store and bought the supplies. Today we did our first craft. Oh boy was it a blast!
My kids love playing on the fridge with magnets. They have an older version of this LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set ?and they love to put in the letters and listen to the sounds and the alphabet song. Really though, they look that it?s MAGNETIC. What is it with kids and magnets?
Regardless, when I saw this awesome Happy Jack tutorial on Disney Family Fun?I had to try it out!
It?s basically just a magnetic jack o? lantern that you make from super simple supplies:
Supplies:
How to:
Gather Your Supplies
Glue the orange paper to one sheet of magnet. You can make your pumpkin more pumpkin shaped...or you cheat like me and just round the corners. Cut a bit of a triangle out for the stem.
If you are lucky enough to find magnet that is black on the front...you won't need to cover your magnet with black construction paper. Otherwise, cut out a few different eyes, noses and mouth (and a stem!) and glue them to the magnet. When the glue dries, cut out the pieces.
Stick it on the fridge
Make a cute face on it before you call the kids over.
Watch what they come up with!
If you have older children, they can probably help with the cutting and drawing of eyes, noses, mouths, etc. Since mine are so young, they mainly watched and enjoyed the finished product! I?m so excited for this craft and can see us making something like this for every holiday!
FYI: This craft uses magnets. Magnets are VERY harmful if swallowed. Use caution if you have little ones in your home.
If you decide to attempt this project, I?d love to hear about it! Either leave me a comment or send me an email with a link to where you blogged about it at heather @ familyfriendlyfrugality.com
DO YOU have a great Halloween craft, tip or tutorial you?d like to share with the Family Friendly Frugality audience? Shoot me an email and if I love it, I?ll share with my readers!?
