DUBLIN, IRELAND: WPP Group's PR and public affairs revenue fell 1.7% on a like-for-like basis to $366.3 million in the third quarter.

In the first nine months of the year, PR and public affairs revenue was down 0.1% on a like-for-like basis to $1.1 billion, compared with the same period of last year.

Windows 8: Make-or-break moment for Microsoft CEO | wishtv.com

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer can't afford to be wrong about Windows 8.

On Thursday in New York, Microsoft will unveil a dramatic overhaul of its ubiquitous Windows operating system. If it flops, the failure will reinforce perceptions that Microsoft is falling behind competitors such as Apple, Google and Amazon as its stranglehold on personal computers becomes less relevant in an era of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

If Ballmer is right, Windows 8 will prove that the world's largest software maker still has the technological chops and marketing muscle to shape the future of computing.

"This is going to be his defining moment," said technology industry analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy. Ballmer's "legacy will be looked at as what he did or didn't do with Windows 8. If Windows 8 is not a success, a lot of people will be looking for Microsoft to make a change at the CEO level."

Windows 8 is designed to run on PCs and tablet computers, heralding the biggest change to the industry's dominant operating system in at least 17 years. It also marks the first time that Microsoft has made touch-screen control the top priority, though the system can still be switched into the familiar desktop mode that allows for control by keyboard and mouse.

Ballmer sees Windows 8 as the catalyst for a new era at Microsoft. He wants the operating system to ensure the company plays an integral role on all the important screens in people's lives ? PCs, smartphones, tablets and televisions.

"We are trying to re-imagine the world from the ground up with Windows 8," Ballmer told The Seattle Times. He declined to be interviewed for this story.

Early reaction has been mixed. Some reviewers like the way the system greets users with a mosaic of tiles displaying applications instead of relying on the desktop icons that served as the welcome mat for years. Critics say it's a confusing jumble that will frustrate users accustomed to the older versions, particularly when they switch to desktop mode and don't see the familiar "start" button and menu.

Windows 8 will hit the market backed by an estimated $1 billion marketing campaign. The advertising frenzy is just one measure of how important Windows 8 is to Microsoft's future.

Ballmer's margin for error is slim after being consistently outpaced by Apple and Google in his nearly 13 years as CEO. During his tenure, Microsoft's stock has lost nearly half its value, wiping out more than $200 billion in shareholder wealth.

But the company's board hasn't expressed any public dissatisfaction with Ballmer, who is Microsoft's second-largest shareholder with a 4 percent stake worth $9 billion. Only his good friend and predecessor, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, owns more of the company's stock. Gates has a 5.5 percent stake.

Since Ballmer succeeded Gates as CEO in January 2000, Microsoft's annual revenue has nearly quadrupled to $74 billion and expanded into lucrative new territory with its popular Xbox 360 video game console, which has given the company a platform for delivering services to television sets. But Microsoft has been slow to respond to technology shifts and has made some costly missteps trying to catch up.

Some of the best-known blunders include the company's iPod clone, the Zune, and its $6.3 billion acquisition of Internet ad service aQuantive.

Ballmer, 56, has spent most of his life at Microsoft. He was attending Stanford University's graduate school of business in 1980 when Gates, a former classmate at Harvard University, persuaded him to drop out and become one of the startup's first 30 employees. He brought more business savvy to the operation just as the company began providing an operating system for IBM Corp.'s first personal computer.

Just two weeks before Ballmer took over, Microsoft's stock reached its peak price. The dot-com bust quickly deflated that market value, and the company became locked in antitrust battles in the U.S. and Europe that distracted management for years.

The biggest question hovering over Windows 8: Is it innovative and elegant enough to lure consumers who are increasingly fond of smartphones, tablets and other sleek gadgets? Those mobile devices have been setting industry standards while Microsoft engineers have spent two years designing a new operating system.

And Windows 8 must address not only the upheaval in the computing market since Windows 7 came out in 2009, but also have the flexibility to adjust to future shifts in technology before Microsoft releases another version in two or three years.

"It doesn't seem like Microsoft is really pushing consumers into the future with Windows 8," said Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps. "What Microsoft has done is like buying a pair of shoes for a kid. The shoes may fit exactly right today, but those shoes probably won't fit six months from now."

Previous versions of Windows and other Microsoft products such as Office are so deeply embedded in companies and government agencies that Microsoft is still assured a steady stream of revenue from that segment of the market. That loyal base of customers is one of the reasons that Microsoft is expected to earn $25 billion on revenue of $80 billion in its current fiscal year ending next June.

"This isn't a company that is on the edge of extinction, like some people would have you think," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis. "What we are seeing with Windows 8 is classic Microsoft. They let the (technology) market lead and then they follow."

But investors want to see Microsoft do something more. The nagging fear on Wall Street is that the PC industry is past its prime and heading into a gradual decline that will pull down Microsoft, too.

The signs of decay have been proliferating since Apple released the iPad in 2010, hatching a tablet computer market that has combined with an already vibrant smartphone market to siphon away technology spending that used to go toward the latest PCs.

Worldwide PC sales year are expected to decline this year for the first time since 2001, according to the research firm ISH iSuppli. It's a drop of just 1 percent, but it underscores a troubling trend that has been hurting Microsoft.

The shift to mobile devices has whittled Microsoft's worldwide share of the computing device market from 67 percent in 2008 to about 30 percent today, estimates Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett. Thanks to its Android software for phones and tablets, Google is now the leader with a 40 percent share of the computing device market. Apple stands at 20 percent.

Analysts don't expect Microsoft's corporate and government customers to immediately embrace the new system, no matter how much it's hyped. About half of this traditionally cautious group of customers still haven't upgraded to Windows 7. Most analysts expect companies and government to hold off on switching to Windows 8 for at least another year.

Ballmer hopes to accelerate the changeover by making Microsoft's Office software suite more compelling, with the help of two major acquisitions.

Microsoft bought the video chat service Skype for $8.5 billion last year and in June agreed to pay $1.2 billion for Yammer, a service the builds social networking services within companies. Both are expected to become key features within Office to make it easier for workers to connect and collaborate with their peers and customers.

Ballmer also has won praise from analysts for striking potentially fruitful partnerships with Yahoo Inc. and Nokia. Microsoft now provides Yahoo with much of the same technology that runs its Bing search engine. The Yahoo deal provides Microsoft with 12 percent of the revenue from the ads shown alongside search results on Yahoo's website.

The Nokia alliance ensured Windows 8 would be the operating system on that company's latest line of smartphones, a potentially valuable platform if Nokia is able to regain some of the market share it has lost in mobile phones during the past five years.

But none of that has yet restored the luster Microsoft had on Wall Street when Gates was in charge.

Ballmer's initially dismissed emerging threats from Google and Apple. He consistently pooh-poohed Google as a one-trick company during its early years and in 2007 declared: "No chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share."

Those were some of his biggest mistakes, detractors say. Google quickly made important inroads in Internet video, online maps, email and mobile computing and contributed to the damage that the iPhone and iPad have done to Microsoft and its partners in the PC market.

Apple's meteoric rise has been especially painful for Microsoft. When Steve Jobs returned to run Apple in 1997, the company was so bad off that it needed a $150 million infusion from Microsoft to stay afloat. Now Apple has a market value of $570 billion ? more than double Microsoft's $250 billion.

On Tuesday, Apple got a chance to upstage Microsoft when CEO Tim Cook showed off the iPad Mini, a smaller and less expensive version of its top-selling tablet.

On Thursday in New York, Ballmer will herald the arrival of the most important product of his reign. The market's response to Windows 8 may determine whether it turns out to be the opening act in his vindication or one of his final moments in the spotlight.

Accountants and bookkeepers key to Digital Economy | Xero ...

Over the past six months, we?ve been in close contact with Australia?s Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE). As we?ve grown exponentially in Australia, Minister Conroy?s department has shown increasing interest in our leadership role in the uptake of cloud technologies amongst SMEs.

So it was an honour to be invited to attend the Prime Minister?s Forum on the Digital Economy in Sydney, where 40 business leaders presented to Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Taking the stand, the first part of my pitch to the government was to highlight the opportunity to engage accountants and bookkeepers as a potential channel to reach and educate small businesses on the merits of cloud computing and the NBN. In the same way that Xero has been able to grow our business, I wanted to highlight the critical role that the accounting advisor can play in small business. I then urged the government to increase investment in development of web services across the many government departments that small business owners need to engage with, rather than simply building compliance websites.

A?report only last week from the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry on the red tape requirements of SMEs (Small & Medium Enterprises), confirmed that nearly half of all small business owners in Australia are spending up to 5 hours on compliance based activities each week.

The SME sector represents 46% of the nation?s GDP, so streamlining compliance through seamless data flows between government and business software providers like Xero could have a profoundly positive impact on productivity and hence Australia?s economy.

Finally, I urged the government to follow the lead of the NZ and UK in developing a Code of Practice for cloud companies. This is all about ensuring a minimum set of disclosures and standards to help raise the bar on providers in this space. Consumers and businesses need to have assurances about moving to the cloud. It is our belief that a government backed framework supported and adhered to by all industry providers would go a long way to seeing cloud computing in this country grow and thrive.

Next steps

There was overwhelming consensus that the day was a success and that significant investment in broadband infrastructure is needed in Australia to ensure the growth in our digital economy and position us to be competitive globally.

All participants had an opportunity to have their say and the number of ideas and ground covered will pose a challenge to the government in using this to help shape policy. At the very least, they?ve now heard from industry.

Julia Gillard was engaging and often quite charming in her summations. At the conclusion of the day she highlighted four key initiatives that she believed were key takeaways that the government would need to act upon:

• Skills: The immediate need to address Australia?s skills pipeline in ICT and ensuring that we attract and develop more talent into this sector;
• Teleworking: Continued efforts to drive teleworking with the aim to have 12% of workforce teleworking for at least one day per week by 2020
• Cloud computing: Development of a comprehensive cloud computing strategy for small and medium business with industry and government participation
• Cyber whitepaper: The expansion of a cyber whitepaper that is currently in the pipeline to include more digital themes around education, skills and the fostering of ecosystems

From my perspective, the day was of huge value and offered real promise to the cloud computing industry in Australia. The Australian government is well aware of the ?Cloud-First? strategy that the US Government has adopted and the dialogue throughout the day would certainly indicate that they are keen to find ways to better support the industry.

Xero will continue to be at the table to promote our views on how to promote cloud computing into the SME sector and we see a critical role for our partners in making this happen.

"No worries, we can watch this movie on my iPad on the plane," I announced with confidence.

"Oh really? Cool. Let's do that!" she replied, proud of her little nerdy man.

Yup. I was cool. I was going to rip a DVD that we just bought to watch on my iPad on a long flight to Korea. How amazed would she be when that movie so easily pops up on the Retina display as we ease into complimentary wine and processed air for a good 13 hours!

And then I tried to actually complete the task of getting a movie from a DVD to an iPad.

Karadzic Says He Should be Rewarded, not Indicted :: Balkan Insight

At the start of the presentation of his defence, Karadzic went on to tell the judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, ICTY, that the Bosnian Serb army did not shell the Markale market in Sarajevo, and that he had no knowledge at the time that Bosniaks ?were being killed in Srebrenica in the summer of 1995.

?Sarajevo is my city and this whole story that we bombed Sarajevo for no reason is unfounded? Each shell that fell on Sarajevo hurt me as well?, said Karadzic adding there were over 2,000 legitimate military targets in the city.

Karadzic explained that his role during the Bosnian war was to ?humanize the conflict?.

?Instead of being indicted for crimes in our civil war, I should have been rewarded for doing everything I could to make sure it did not come to war. I have minimized the sufferings of civilians, made sure that the number of casualties was three or four times smaller, and signed many treaties to stop the war,? said Karadzic.

After Karadzic finishes his opening statement, the first witness for the defence will be called, the Ukrainian general Andrei Demurenko. Demurenko will testify that ? even if a grenade did explode in the Markale market in Sarajevo on August 28, 1995 and killed over 40 people ? it could not have come from the Bosnian Serb positions.

Karadzic?s trial started in October 2009. The prosecution took two years to present its evidence and about 200 witnesses were called.

Taking into consideration the fact that the prosecution spent about 300 working hours to present its case, the ICTY allocated the same amount of time for Karadzic?s evidence. Karadzic is appealing this decision.

Karadzic is charged, as the former President of Republika Srpska and the former supreme commander of its armed forces, with the genocide in Srebrenica, the expulsion of Bosniaks and Croats across Bosnia, taking international soldiers as hostages, and with terrorizing Sarajevo citizens with a shelling and sniping campaign.

He has announced plans to call 600 witnesses in his defence, and said that he may testify as the final witness.

Hadapt hints at the future of Hadoop and BI ? Data | GigaOM

Hadoop startup Hadapt has made its unified Hadoop-and-SQL analytic architecture even easier by adding native advanced analytic functions and integrating tightly with Tableau?s powerful BI software. It?s a sign of things to come as Hadoop and traditional SQL-based BI become cozy across the board.

Boston-based startup Hadapt is practicing its own form of polygamy ? bringing as many piece of the data ecosystem as possible under its roof ? and the resulting union looks pretty nice. In version 2.o of its Adaptive Analytical Platform, the company is expanding on its original premise of a unified architecture for Hadoop and SQL by adding advanced analytic functions and a tight integration with business-intelligence favorite Tableau Software.

The new capabilities are a big step for Hadapt, which launched less than two years ago at our inaugural Structure: Data conference, and foretell a coming trend in the Hadoop marketplace. In a nutshell, the new version ships with some standard analytical functions such as sentiment analysis and funnel analysis, as well as a development kit to help users write their own. And users can write the functions in standard SQL rather than trying to compose them in MapReduce or any other framework designed specifically to work with Hadoop.?(For a more-technical explanation of Hadapt 2.0 and how it stacks up against traditional analytic databases, you might want to check out database industry analyst Curt Monash?s blog post on it.)

The real beauty, however, might be the integration with Tableau, which has become a darling of business analysts everywhere who appreciate its point-and-click analytic functions and beautiful visualizations. Hadapt CTO Philip Wickline told me during a recent call that Tableau is ?overwhelmingly the choice? for BI within Hadapt customer accounts. I received a demo of Hadapt functions exposed via Tableau?s interface, and it was impressive to watch someone run and visualize an Apache Mahout-based sentiment analysis literally by making a few mouse clicks.

Drilling down on a social-media analysis job with Tableau

Hadapt isn?t perfect, and Tableau isn?t the be-all, end-all of analytics and visualization software, but this new feature set is a sign of how we should expect to see Hadoop evolve in the near future. Historically speaking, Hadoop is slow compared with the interactive query capabilities of relational analytic databases. It?s also not easy to use if you?re relegated to writing MapReduce jobs, and there?s no native capability for visualizing the results of those jobs.

On the other hand, specialized analytic tools such as Tableau and even machine-data master Splunk have been known to crumple under the weight of the massive data sets that Hadoop was designed to handle. Splunk has built Hadoop into its Splunk Enterprise product in order to enable easier processing of huge data sets. Furthermore, Hadoop is almost a necessity for adding structure to unstructured data and making it analyzable by BI tools and relational databases at all.

All this has some industry watchers wondering whether Hadoop is really the answer as big data users increasingly require capabilities such as real-time processing and rapid interaction with data. Startups such as Precog are trying to answer these concerns by building their own analytic tools from scratch that don?t rely on Hadoop at all to handle even rather large data sets. Google evolved has from its MapReduce processing roots and build tool such as Dremel (productized as Big Query), Percolator and Pregel.

Of course, no amount of work wholly outside the world of Hadoop is going to change the amount being done with Hadoop as the foundation of a BI and SQL revolution. A startup called Platfora is promising a product that turns Hadoop into an engine for an entirely new type of BI experience. Hadoop-distribution vendor MapR is driving an open source project called Apache Drill that replicates Google?s Dremel on top of Hadoop. Outside Hadoop-based startups, large companies such as EMC Greenplum, Microsoft, Teradata and others have at least decided to make Hadoop a first-class citizen in their big data work, even where they have other legacy products to push as well.

Daniel Abadi, Hadapt co-founder and chief scientist, and Yale professor, says that just because you might circumvent MapReduce to increase the speed of processing different types of jobs, ?that doesn?t mean you have to circumvent Hadoop itself.? Hadapt, he added, actually emerged from a research project called HadoopDB that had been trying to make Hadoop more interactive since its inception in 2009. Three years later, it?s clear Abadi and company were onto something.

Did CM Punk make a big mistake by not picking his opponent for Hell in a Cell?

We'll never know who was on the Hell in a Cell poster that CM Punk was supposed to reveal on Monday night's Raw.

Perhaps there was no poster underneath the curtain all along ? just more hot air from the puffed-up WWE Champion.

Mr. McMahon granted Punk the option to choose John Cena or Ryback as his opponent for Hell in a Cell. But instead of seizing control over his own destiny on Raw, Punk opted to keep the WWE Universe waiting as he claimed he would need more time to make his decision. (VIDEO | PHOTOS)

Much to Punk's surprise, that request was swiftly rejected by the boss.

"Guess what pal ? you just blew it," Mr. McMahon barked at The Straight Edge Superstar. "You're not going to make your own decision. I'm going to make the decision for you."

In separate one-on-one conversations with Mr. McMahon, both Cena and Ryback made strong cases why they should face Punk for the WWE Title inside Hell in a Cell. But ultimately, it was the undefeated juggernaut who would sign the championship contract after Cena respectfully stepped aside. Ryback will now get to sink his teeth into his greatest challenge because the leader of the Cenation deferred to him.

Did Punk make a crucial error by attempting to delay his choice? Ryback's actions during the explosive contract signing might have the WWE Champion asking himself this very question. Shortly after Cena voiced his support for Ryback with a "feed me more" chant, the nearly 300-pound wrecking machine emphatically slammed Punk's head into the table and planted him into the canvas with Shell Shocked (VIDEO | PHOTOS). If you thought that was a wild display of rage, imagine what Ryback could be capable of once he's locked inside Hell in a Cell on Oct. 28 with The Straight Edge Superstar.

Punk can only hold himself responsible for the daunting showdown that lies ahead. Although it's far from a guarantee that facing Cena would've been the easier matchup, at least the WWE Champion knew what he would've been up against: a very familiar ? and still injured ? rival. Now, in less than two weeks, Punk must come face to face with the "devil he doesn't know" rather than "the devil he does."

Stock Futures Higher on Solid Chinese Export Data. Stocks to Watch: AMD, AMZN, AAPL, BAC, C, CLWR, S, TXN

New York, October 15^th (TradersHuddle.com) ? Stock futures were pointing to a higher open as global participants react to solid Chinese export data. Adding to the bullish sentiment was inflation data out of China, showing the government still has room for further stimulus. Futures were gaining ahead of retail sales data and as a busy earnings reporting week gets underway.

In Asia, most stocks fell amid growth concerns. Participants turned jittery ahead of earnings season, concern that the sluggish growth in the global economy could impact corporate results. In China, the Shanghai Composite fell to its lowest level in a week, pressured by earnings warnings. Meanwhile, the Nikkei gained 0.51% after participants were encouraged by inflation data out of China that signaled the government has room for further policy easing to shore up growth.

In Europe, markets were trading to the upside amid news that Spain might be closer to request a sovereign bailout and after encouraging trade data from China. Export data was much better than expected, overshooting expectations by roughly twice the expected rate. Despite Spain?s Prime Minister Rajoy continued resistance to seek a bailout, there were reports that senior euro zone officials said the bailout request is expected to come in November.

The euro was adding against the Dollar, trading below the $1.30 level. Crude oil was losing 0.30% to $91.58 per barrel. Also in the energy complex, natural gas was slumping 1.02% to $3.574 per MMBtu. Gold was sliding 0.69% $1745.80 an ounce, and silver was tumbling 1.08% to $33.305 an ounce; meanwhile copper was retreating 0.24%.

On economic news, at 8:30 am the Commerce Department will release September retail sales data, while the New York Fed will release its Empire State Manufacturing Index. At 10 am, Business Inventories data will be available.

Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD), the world?s second largest chipmaker, will be in focus after plunging more than 14% in the prior session, as it issued downside revenue and earnings guidance due to weak demand stemming from a sluggish global economy. According to several sources and reports, the chipmaker is now planning significant layoffs that could range between 10 and 20% of its global workforce. AMD is expected to report its quarterly results on Thursday October 18^th.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), the maker of iPads and iPhones, was climbing 0.64% to $633.77 in pre-market after it lost 2.6% last week. Apple stock has been in correction mode in the last weeks after hitting an all-time high of $705.07. The stock broke through its 50day moving average amid chatter over worker unrest and supply problems at its manufacturing partner Foxconn. The supply issues come at particularly critical times, when the iPhone 5 has just launched and Apple is experiencing high demand. The chatter also impacted sentiment over potential shipments in the third and fourth quarters. Last Friday, AllThingsD.com reported that Apple is likely to unveil the iPad mini at an event scheduled for October 23^rd. This morning, Reuters is reporting that Microsoft will unveil an Xbox music service, which could present a challenge to Apple?s iTunes. Apple is scheduled to report its quarterly results on October 25^th after the market closes. On average analysts expect a profit of $8.91 per share on revenue of $36.39 billion.

Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) will be in focus as earnings season for the bank started on Friday with JPMorgan and Wells Fargo reporting their quarterly results. The stock will be reacting to Citi?s report this morning, with participants also focusing on BofA?s own results due out on October 17^th. On average analysts expect Bank of America to report a loss of $0.07 per share on revenue of $21.89 billion. The highest earnings estimate is a profit of $0.02, while the lowest is a loss of $0.18 per share. Last quarter, the lender earned $0.19 per share, nearly 36% more than consensus.

Citigroup (NYSE: C), the diversified financial services firm, will be in focus after it report its quarterly results later this morning. The bank is expected on average to report a profit of $0.96 per share on revenue of $18.35 billion. The highest earnings estimate is $1.09 per share, while the lowest is $0.88 per share.

Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) was surging 14.7% to $6.57 in pre-market after Softbank and Sprint Nextel reached a deal under which Softbank will pay $20.1 billion for a 70% stake in the third largest U.S. wireless carrier. Under the terms of the deal, Softbank to buy $8 billion worth of shares directly from Sprint at a price of $5.25 each and tender for another $12.1 billion worth of the shares from existing holders at a price of $7.30 a share, a 27% premium from Sprint?s Friday closing price. Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR), the wireless provider in which Sprint holds a majority stake, was soaring 24.5% to $2.89 in pre-market on the news. Clearwire surged more than 70% on Thursday amid initial rumors regarding the Softbank ? Sprint deal.

Texas Instruments (NASDAQ: TXN), the maker of digital signal processing (DSP) and microcontroller (MCU) semiconductors, will be in focus after reports that Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is in advanced discussions to acquire the company?s mobile chip arm. Amazon already markets e-readers and tablets and its expected to enter the smartphone market. TI?s chips are used in Amazon?s Kindle Fire tablet. The chipmaker said last month that it will shift its wireless investment focus from products like smartphones to a broader market, including industrial clients such as carmakers. Amazon was climbing more than 0.6% in pre-market.

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) ? There were no rants this time, no ignoring the judge or getting out of their seats to pray ? just one scornful remark from the professed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks as a weeklong pretrial hearing began for five Guantanamo Bay detainees.

It was a sharply different atmosphere as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his four co-defendants returned to court at the U.S. base in Cuba for the first time since their arraignment in May, when their concerted effort to disrupt the proceedings turned what was supposed to be a brief hearing into an unruly, 13-hour spectacle.

This time, the defendants sat quietly, cooperated with their attorneys and responded to the judge when asked. And they were awarded a small victory: The judge granted a defense request to allow the five men to skip the rest of this week's hearing if they choose, rather than risk being forced out of their cells and into the court by military guards.

Asked if he understood the implications of not attending court while hearings go on without him, Mohammed made his only statement of the day: "Yes, but I don't think there is any justice in this court."

The issue was only one of a handful to be resolved Monday in a weeklong hearing on about two dozen motions before the formal trial, which is at least a year away. Most of the day was taken up by the debate over whether defendants must attend all proceedings under the rules of the special tribunals for wartime offenses known as military commissions.

Lawyers for two of the defendants said the threat to forcibly remove them from their cells and bring them to court is traumatic for men who were subjected to harsh interrogations that they say amounted to torture while in CIA custody, before going to Guantanamo in September 2006.

"Our clients may believe that ... I don't want to be subjected to this procedure that transports me here, brings up memories, brings up emotions of things that happened to me," said Jim Harrington, who represents Ramzi Binalshibh, accused of helping to provide support to the hijackers who crashed planes into the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.

Harrington's statement elicited groans from a small group of family members of Sept. 11 victims who were chosen by lottery to come to Guantanamo to view the proceedings. A few other families watched the proceedings on closed-circuit TV from U.S. military bases.

Prosecutors wanted the men to be required to attend court sessions. The judge, Army Col. James Pohl finally ruled that Mohammed and his codefendants would not be forced to attend the hearings. He said he may require them to attend future pretrial sessions and said they would have to be present for their trial.

His questioning of the defendants brought a rare light moment to what is considered of the most significant terrorism prosecutions in U.S. history.

The judge told each man that the trial would go on without them if they were to somehow escape from U.S. custody, drawing a smile of disbelief from Binalshibh. "I'm escaping from custody?" he said in English.

The same question prompted some sarcasm from Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, a Pakistani citizen accused of funneling money to the hijackers. "I'll make sure to leave some notes," he said in English.

Mohammed, dressed in a white headdress and black vest, his bushy beard dyed a rusty orange with henna, sat serenely reading legal papers or following the procedures in a specially designed high-tech courtroom that allows the government to muffle sounds so spectators behind a glass wall cannot hear classified information.

The orderly scene was in stark contrast to the May arraignment on charges that include terrorism and murder. At that session, one prisoner was briefly restrained for acting out, Binalshibh launched into an incoherent rant, the men generally ignored the judge and refused to use the court translation system, and two stood up to pray at one point.

Mohammed's civilian lawyer, David Nevin, said he wasn't sure whether Mohammed would show up for court on Tuesday, saying he would likely decide each morning.

"Still front and center in everything that's going on here is what Mohammed said when he had a chance to talk," said Nevin, a prominent U.S. death penalty lawyer. "He said 'There is no justice here.' That's the problem. That was the problem then. That's the problem now. It'll be the problem tomorrow and the day after that. "

In addition to those watching in Guantanamo, families and the public were invited to view the proceedings from closed-circuit video in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maryland.

Just seven families attended the first day of the hearings at a U.S. military base in Brooklyn. Ken Fairben came with a picture of his paramedic son, Keith. As he watched the proceedings, he said he looked into each of the men's faces, wondering, "What is he thinking? Why would he want to do this?"

The suspects could be sentenced to death if convicted, but Fairben said he hopes they get life sentences instead.

"If you give them death penalties, that's martyrdom to them," he said. "Why give them something they want?"

The focus of the week's hearing include broad security rules for the case, including measures to prevent the accused from publicly revealing in testimony what happened to them in the CIA prisons. Prosecutors have asked the judge to approve what is known as a protective order intended to prevent the release of classified information during trial.

Lawyers for the defendants say the rules, as proposed, will hobble their defense. The American Civil Liberties Union, which has filed a separate challenge, says the restrictions are overly broad and would improperly keep the public from hearing the men speak about their captivity.

The U.S. government has acknowledged that the defendants were subjected to "enhanced interrogation techniques" before being transferred to Guantanamo in 2006, which in some cases included the simulated drowning method known as waterboarding.

Mohammed and his four co-defendants face charges that include terrorism, conspiracy and 2,976 counts of murder in violation of the law of war, one count for each known victim of the Sept. 11 attacks at the time the charges were filed.

Mohammed, a Pakistani citizen who grew up in Kuwait and attended college in North Carolina, has told military officials that he planned the Sept. 11 attacks "from A to Z" and was involved in about 30 other terrorist plots. He has said, among other things, that he personally beheaded Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. In addition to Binalshibh and al-Aziz Ali. the other defendants are Walid bin Attash; Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi.

Obama touts benefits of auto bailout as debate looms

Obama is hoping to build on Biden's confident performance at the vice presidential debate on Thursday after his own listless debate performance last week gave Romney a sharp boost in opinion polls. He meets the Massachusetts governor for the second of three debates on Tuesday evening in a town-hall format.

In his address, Obama highlighted trade agreements that helped promote sales of U.S. autos abroad. Romney has called the Obama administration's record on trade weak and promised to wage much more aggressive campaigns to open markets abroad to U.S. goods and services.

"I want to see more cars on the road in places like South Korea imported from Detroit and Toledo and Chicago," Obama added.

Obama also said that "after 30 years of inaction, we raised fuel standards so that by the middle of the next decade, cars and light trucks will average almost 55 miles per gallon - nearly double what they get today."

Pakistani police have arrested a number of suspects in the case of a 14-year-old girl shot and wounded by the Taliban for promoting education for girls and criticizing the fundamentalist Islamic movement, officials said Friday.

Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf visits Malala Yousafzai, the schoolgirl shot by the Taliban, in hospital -- calling her 'the real face of Pakistan.' Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

The shooting of?Malala?Yousufzai along with two classmates while they were on their way home from school Tuesday horrified people in Pakistan and internationally. The shooting has been followed by an outpouring of support for a girl who earned the enmity of the Taliban for publicizing their acts and speaking about the importance of education for girls.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the shooting, saying that the girl was promoting "Western thinking."

Providing more details, a Taliban spokesman said the top leadership of the Taliban's Swat Valley chapter decided two months ago to kill Yousufzai in a carefully planned attack after her family ignored repeated warnings.

Police have been questioning people in the town of Mingora, where the shooting took place.

Mingora police chief Afzal Khan Afridi said arrests had been made, but he declined to give any details about the number of people detained or what role they're suspected in having in the shooting. He said he did not want to endanger the ongoing investigation.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik told reporters Friday that the two gunmen who staged the attack were not among those arrested, but he said investigators had identified the masterminds and efforts were under way to capture all those involved.

The Taliban spokesman, Sirajuddin Ahmad, said her family had been warned three times ? the most recent warning coming last week ? before the decision was made to execute her.

Ahmad said the local Taliban leader Maulana Fazlullah and his deputies selected three attackers, including two trained sharpshooters, who carefully studied the girl's route home from school.

Even before the Taliban took over the Swat Valley, Fazlullah's radio broadcasts spread fear among residents in the area. The group first started to exert its influence in 2007 and quickly extended its reach to much of the valley by the next year. They set about imposing their will on residents by forcing men to grow beards, preventing women from going to the market and blowing up many schools ? the majority for girls.

Scammers are Targeting Boomers, Here's How to Fight Back ...

?The Boomer? is a column written for adults nearing retirement age and those already in their ?golden years.? It will also promote reader interaction by posting e-mail responses and answering reader questions. E-mail your questions or topic ideas to thefoxboomer@gmail.com.

As more and more baby boomers embrace the world of technology, they become increasingly vulnerable to risks posed by online identity theft and over sharing sensitive personal information.?

Scammers are increasingly targeting boomers with online scams, and boomers need to become more defensive and aware of safe online practices.

AVG Technologies, an internet and mobile security provider, recently released a survey that shows boomers need to become more proactive with their digital security.??Of baby boomers surveyed with home Internet access, AVG determined 65%? don?t? check online banking statements more than once per week?putting them at a much greater risk of not being able to detect fraudulent activities.?

I had a chance to speak with the CEO of AVG, JR Smith, to discuss some of the findings of the survey and how boomers can protect themselves. Here is what JR had to say:

Boomer: Why are so many baby boomers still not aware of the resources available to them to protect against identity theft?

Smith:? AVG conducted a survey of the top 10 savviest cities in the U.S. for digital protection and found that baby boomers still have a lot of work to do when it comes to safeguarding against identity theft, financial fraud and loss of personal data.

Out of the 1,300 boomers who were contacted, it was determined that at least 10% have clicked on a link from a well-known company that turned out to be a phishing scam. This figure, along with the results that nearly 40% of those surveyed said they should research identity protection tools or monitoring services, shows there is still a lot of room for baby boomers to learn more about the resources that are available.

Boomer: How can baby boomers become more educated about digital scammers?

Smith:? Boomers can become more educated by protecting themselves and their families with solutions that will prevent loss of data. Baby boomers can utilize tools such as AVG?s AntiVirus Free 2013 or AVG MultiMu to keep email protected, shop online without worrying about identity theft and share photos or information without having to look over one?s shoulder. They can also follow best practices that will prevent them from being taken advantage of by scammers.

Boomer: Why do scammers view the boomers as being deficient in online safety skills?

Smith:? Although baby boomers are frequent users of technology platforms and devices (81% own desktop computers, 61% use laptops, and another 30% have smartphones. A surprising 20% use tablets to conduct online transactions), many scammers believe this population is not savvy enough when it comes to safeguarding their personal or online data. Devices such as tablets and smartphones make it possible for baby boomers to have access to family photos, financial documents or medical records from any location and at any time. But, many don?t know that if they?re in a public place such as a coffee shop, public Wi-Fi increases the threat of data theft. And, scammers are fully aware of this, leading them to carefully monitor how baby boomers interact with tech devices and their personal information.

Boomer: What tips can you give boomers to minimize the risk of fraudulent charges, identity theft and personal data lost?

Smith: Use one credit card with a low spending limit for all online purchases. Monitor this account regularly, and flag any inappropriate activity immediately to the bank or lending institution.

• Change passwords regularly, use variations for each online account, and never, ever share them with others.
• Back up data! Back up data on computers with external hard drives or a cloud-based solution. Don?t forget about mobile devices, too.
• Protect data on the go. The more personal information is shared via mobile devices, the more hackers will target these tools.?
• Be wary of phishing scams. Never click on links in emails from banks, or other financial institutions ? go directly to their URL and enter log-in information from their homepage.

So whenever you?re working with a homeowner, understand? it?s not just one job?it?s a highly valuable marketing opportunity. Provide excellent service and do everything you can to turn the homeowner into a ?raving fan? of your business. If you?re successful, the word WILL spread amongst your target customers!

Kodak to end healthcare benefits for retirees

(Reuters) - Bankrupt Eastman Kodak Co said on Wednesday it was ending retiree healthcare and survivor benefits at the end of the year, allowing it to resolve a $1.2 billion liability, one of its biggest obligations.

The benefits, which include medical, dental, life insurance and survivor income benefits, will end December 31.

Kodak will give retirees a $635 million unsecured claim, a $7.5 million cash payment to support initial administration and benefit obligations, and a $15 million allowed administrative claim that would have priority in reorganization proceedings.

The deal with the official committee representing retirees in Kodak's bankruptcy proceedings does not affect pension benefits.

In a statement, Kodak said the move will improve its liquidity even as it acknowledged "this action will pose challenges for retirees." But the company said the step was necessary to allow Kodak to emerge from bankruptcy protections "as a profitable, sustainable company."

Kodak has been paying about $10 million per month to provide those benefits.

Kodak filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January. The Rochester, New York, company is a pioneer of photography but struggled to adapt to the digital age, and is shifting its focus toward its commercial packaging and printing business.

Russia says its arms not onboard plane seized by Turkey

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Moscow on Thursday accused Ankara of endangering Russian lives after Turkish fighter jets intercepted a Syrian airplane on route from Moscow to Damascus which Russia's arms exports agency said was not carrying any of its cargo.

Turkish military jets escorted the Damascus-bound Airbus A-320, carrying about 30 passengers from Moscow, into Ankara airport late on Wednesday after Turkey said it had received intelligence that the plane had military supplies onboard.

Some of the cargo was seized in Turkey before the passenger jet was allowed to continue its trip. No details were given of what was taken off the plane. ?

"We had no cargo on that airplane. We always deliver our weapons in full compliance with international norms," said Vyacheslav Davidenko, spokesman for Russia's monopoly arms exporter Rosoboronexport.

"Sending weapons on a passenger airplane breaks about every law there is on weapons exports," he said.

Russia has been one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's staunchest allies, blocking three U.N. Security Council resolutions aimed at piling pressure on him while selling his armed forces nearly $1 billion in arms last year.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said it was demanding an explanation from Turkish authorities over the plane's detention, saying Turkey had refused to grant Russian diplomatic staff access to 17 Russian citizens onboard during the eight hours that the flight was held up.

"The Russian side is insisting on an explanation of the reasons for such actions by the Turkish authorities," the ministry said in a statement. It said that "the lives and safety of the passengers were placed under threat" by the incident.

The statement also said the Russian passengers were given no food and not allowed to enter the airport terminal but were only allowed to step off the plane and onto the tarmac occasionally.

A Turkish Foreign Ministry official said it had received no query from Russia about the plane's interception.

Yelena Kara-Sal, a top Russian consular official, said the cargo seized by the Turkish authorities was not of Russian origin, the Interfax news agency reported.

"Right now there is no discussion that the cargo is of Russian origin. The workers of the consulate will contact local authorities within a day for an explanation of the details," said Kara-Sal.

An arms industry source said Moscow had not stopped its arms exports to Damascus, despite mixed signals from Russia about whether it has continued to supply Syria with weapons since the conflict between Assad's forces and rebels has escalated.

"If we needed to send any kind of military-technical equipment or arms it would have been carried out properly and not through any illegal means, certainly not on a civilian aircraft," the source said, according to Interfax.

President Vladimir Putin said in June that Russia does not send Syria weapons that could be used in a civil conflict.

A Russian-operated ship carrying ammunition was stopped and searched in Cyprus in January. The ship reached Syria with the cargo days after promising the destination would not be Syria but Turkey. (Writing by Thomas Grove; Editing by Steve Gutterman and Andrew Osborn)
